It's kind of a double-edged sword and depends where you live. It's been helpful for connecting dissidents, organizing grass-root protests and opening up repressed societies, and was even integral to revolutions in autocratic countries during the Arab Spring.

But since the US isn't currently repressed and in need of people-power to overcome a great governmental evil, we get bored and use it to be show off our narcissism and destroy the lives of those who make bad jokes on twitter in the name of "social justice."
