I wonder why some people chose age over year and vice versa.

Well, depends on when their birthday is. If your birthday is at the start of the year, birthday would be better because it would say they live through that year at least until their birthday. Or if your birthday is toward the end of the year, that means the year would be more helpful because there's actually two different years where you are a certain age, so it won't help that much to narrow it down.
