Imax vs 3D - Which do you prefer?

3D is nothing but a gimmick and the proof lies in the fact that it is only used for genre films like fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. If 3D is really the next big step in cinema then why haven't the filmmakers used it for all types of movies?

Why is Scorsese only filming his kids movie in 3D? Will he make a gangster film or hard R film in 3D? Why was Shutter Island not in 3D? Is Spielberg going to film Lincoln in 3D instead of just his little mo-cap movies? Why are these filmmakers only using 3D for their big budget genre fests? If they really believe 3D is the next revolutionary step in filmmaker, it would be used in ALL types of movies. But no, we all know Spielberg would scoff at the idea of Lincoln in 3D but think it perfectly fine for Tintin.

Are sound, color, and CG advancements that are only used in sci-fi and fantasy movies? I don't think so.

The defense rests.

IMAX. 3D can suck it. Though thanks to the majority of films being IMAX 3D versus IMAX 2D, I go to Dolby.

I never prefer 3D to anything. I don't hate it, but I don't need it. At least the way it is now.

IMAX. I hate 3-D.

IMAX.

Dunkirk was the most immersive theater experience I've ever had.

Imax 3D. Although they really need to update their glasses from those cheap plastic smudge magnets.

Imax 3D is self defeating. All it does is shrink the massive screen. What's the point?

I just prefer good old fashioned 2D in my local theater. It's cheap, nearby, and it does the job.

To be completely fair I've never watched a movie in Imax (at least as I recall), and I would sort of like to at least once just for the experience.

As for 3D, I've given it more than a fair chance, I've watched several movies including Doctor Strange, and none of them look 3D to me, just blurry and headache inducing. Maybe I just don't have an eye for it (I hear it doesn't work for some people), but I can't see myself watching any more 3D movies.

I suppose I can't fully judge until I see an Imax movie for myself, but as a general rule I don't really like gimmicks during my movie-going experience. I don't put quite as much stock into grand visuals and spectacle as some people, if the storyline is good I can find just as much enjoyment in watching a movie on a relatively small TV screen as I can in a movie-theater. I've always sort of felt like all the "super-duper crystal-clear HD 4K Blu-Ray 3D" stuff is sort of missing the point of storytelling, just my opinion though.

Imax and it's not even close. Since Avatar I have no interested in 3D gimmick. I seen couple of movies after in 3D (usually those converted from 2D) and had just bad experience. It's not worth it.

3D sucks and should die forever. IMAX shot in actual 70 mm shown in true IMAX format is the absolute best and pinnacle presentation for movies.

Also, look to be honest I don't think like "NEVER USE 3D again." But let's be honest, the glut of bad 3D films in the eight years since Avatar has been immense, and I've rarely seen 3D enhance the experience at all.

No one can convince me Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is better in 3D just because they prepped the production for a 3D conversion without actually shooting in 3D at all.

Also, are any movies actually shot in 3D anymore? Besides the last Transformers movie?

Guardians of the Galaxy didn't shoot in 3D. Has any MCU movie even been shot with 3D cameras?

3D always miniaturize the screen so the huge set pieces look tiny as opposite to IMAX.

Also 3D has yet to evolve to overcome the night time scenes issue.

So IMAX >>>>>>> 3D
