Drama Immigrant Drama “The Brutalist”

That was a great way to spend an afternoon. This really is a tale of the American dream, or what one would hope it would be when you're leaving or fleeing one territory in search of something better in the United States. This film just felt full of life and vibrancy when László reaches the States and starts to establish himself, make friends, and breathe a sigh of a relief, given from where he's escaped.

But there's also the ugly side of the American dream for those coming from abroad, where their presence is merely tolerated instead of accepted. This was a fantastic film that does not shy away from how we often secretly view those coming from abroad, how we find solace in things like drugs, and when it comes to your passion, like architecture, every detail counts, and any attempt to meddle with that vision can and will be met with resistance.

All key players give fantastic performances. Adrien Brody made me want to take up smoking with how much he does it in this film. Guy Pearce is infectious and full of charm- save for one moment, you know the one if you've seen the film- and though Felicity Jones isn't in the film as long as the former two, there's a quiet grace to her performance and longing to finally reconnect with László. I'd call this one of my favorite films of the year, but that wouldn't be right since this came out last year and is only now getting a wider release. But it is a fantastic film that, even with its runtime, I'd recommend.

Plus, this movie just made me smile with how many light-hearted moments it has and seeing László work on his projects.

They gotta start revoking Academy memberships for these people. That said, I still think The Brutalist is the frontrunner for Best Picture this year.

His painfully awkward speech aside, he deserved every molecule of that statue. Best performance of the year for my money. Top 3 of the decade so far.
