You have to pay money for the ability to play off free peer 2 peer hosted gameplay that costs Microsoft nothing. Sony lets you play online for free and gives their game dedicated servers for lag free gaming, for free.

Microsoft basically charges you $50 a year for a glorified Gamespy Arcade. But hey, at least with Gamespy Arcade, some of the games have real servers.
