The family of a convicted killer, currently serving 25 years to life, are suing the New York Correctional Services Department because they say the word inmate is degrading. Specifically, they say it implies that he is in prison to mate with other men.
Gerard Domond was 24 years old back in 1987 when he shot another man dead in a drug deal that went wrong. He is eligible for parole in 2013. But his sister, Maria Domond, says that the use of the word inmate is degrading and is a cruel form of psychological programming. The lawsuit is seeking $50m for mental anguish.
Its true that the word mate can imply sexual coupling. But it can also imply friendship, companionship and just generally being part of a group. It will be interesting to see how far Gerard Domon and his sister get with the case.
