I think it would be cool for new, non-Meta villains to be included with the series, this would have Frank having some real challenges in fighting against some of the opponents, and have some ongoing nemesis to have confrontations with. I seriously doubt he's going to have another one-on-one with the Kingpin, so let's see more non-powered villains. Martial artists, people with guns, knives, skilled wrestlers, etc.

It doesn't appear that Frank Castle will be casting any meta villain types in the show anyway.

I believe "meta" is more of a DC term for superheroes. But I believe it's been said that there will be no super humans in the first season of the Punisher. They definitely want to keep it grounded. And the Punisher comics of tons of non powered characters to draw from, so many d-list characters they can have fun with. They certainly don't "need" to invent more, there's plenty to adapt and re-invent.

I'd like to see some of the bad guys from the MAX series from like 12 years ago. Lets stay away from Ma Gnucci and The Russian (well, the head on a womans body Russian), and bring in the Widows, the Baltic slavers, the Man of Stone, a lot of those kind of adversaries. Hell, just The Slavers trade could be a whole season in itself.

Those certainly can be used in later seasons.

There is plenty of fodder for Frank to plow through. I say keep re-inventing the generig bad guy #1, #2 and #3. The problem with introducing name villains is at some point they are getting clipped. It would be better to keep them around a bit and build their hubris, and as such establish the lore. So when the inevitable face off happens, there are some stakes involved.

The Ennis 616 villains have so much comedy wrapped around them, I wonder how they would work in a clearly more serious setting. I suppose it's just a matter of writing, but I have to go into some heavy suspension of disbelief if they bring out the Gnucci family and the Russian. The Carbones with the assassins, would be easy to do, maybe in the 3rd season. If Micro gets sidelined they could use Mikey Fondozzi for the intel. Maybe drop the Thorn character if they want to keep it real.

Yea the Russian would be weird to see. I dont see anyway you can have someone that looks like that show up and not have it just be ridiculous and funny lol.

I think the Man Boobs Russian is a thing best left in the Ennis comic run. To say that its impossible to do without being transphobic is an understatement.

I wouldn't be opposed to using the Russian in a more straightforward, serious manner, though. Have him be some ex-Soviet super soldier effort that achieved a modicum of success, and gets hired by the season Big Bad to deal with Frank. Frank then has to face a minor OCP, since while he has a lot of experience fighting normal humans? He's never actually faced someone with significant superhuman powers before, of the "Shooting me doesn't work well" type ( I'd do him as "bargain basement Luke Cage," enough that ordinary small arms don't really hurt him, but not so much that he's impervious to all conventional ordinance ).

hmmm yea a reworked and revised version of The Russian would actually be pretty cool...Do we still go with the signature waldo type shirt and flat top look? lol

It's possible Ennis borrowed the idea of the Russian's striped shirt from real life telnyashka, a russian army undershirt. This could be utilized in the show to tie him into the character.

I wouldn't mind seeing some tactical adversaries for Frank. People of similar mind and skill sets. Sniper/Rich von Burian could be someone to work with, and sure if they re-work the Russsian a he could be a character of Barracuda stature. The Russian could be a tier below Barracuda in terms of skill progression for Frank. The idea being that the challenges should grow constantly harder to face but Frank just powers through with smarts, skill or pure white rage, that is controlled aggression, if necesary.
