There's been a lot of talk about gay characters in games, and whether there should be more, which made my mind wander as I was playing some retro Mario the other day....

I'm sure birdo isn't a girl, which only leaves the option of him/her being a transvestite.

What do you guys think?

lol @ the thread title

What makes you think Birdo's not a girl?

Because the manuals described him as a he.

From gaygamer.net's top 20 gayest game characters of all time

11. Birdo – Super Mario Series

While everyone else in our countdown so far has been humanoid, I think we would be remiss in not putting Birdo in our list. In “her” first appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo was described in the manual as such: “He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He’d rather be called Birdetta.” Then they dropped the Birdetta line and kept the rest. In subsequent printings and games, Nintendo corrected the “mistake” and Birdo became a full fledged female. So in reality, Birdo was the first full Male to Female transsexual in the video game universe. Birdo does still retain some of her early tranny roots. I mean look at the size of that rock on her finger! Definitely a drag queen ring if I ever saw one and believe me, living in SF for 11 years, I saw plenty…

:(
I always thought her and Yoshi had a secret "christmas party at the office" kind of relationship.

Poor Yoshi, I hope he knows.

Birdo is a female. Even the first Super Mario Super Show had Birdo as a female.

Just ask Wiki!

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birdo:
Gender and species
Although Nintendo of America classifies Birdo as female and some classify it as transsexual, the first edition game manual for Super Mario Bros. 2 describes Birdo as follows: "He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called 'Birdetta.'" Based on this description, it is arguable that Birdo is the first transgendered video game character. Subsequent printings of the game manual delete the Birdetta sentence but retains the first description.
In Japan, Birdo is known as "Catherine" and purportedly enjoys being called "Cathy". However, the Birdo character has always been male in the original Japanese versions. Presumably to avoid controversy, Nintendo of America has localized Birdo as female in future appearances of the character. It was speculated that Birdo was possibly transgendered, and Nintendo of America would eventually retcon this tidbit to avoid raising any concerns about the character's transsexuality.

So the answer (as is the case with many prickly sexual concepts) is:
"Yes. But not in America."

-- END!

So all those times I killed Birdo were hate crimes? :(

To Birdo:

You'll always be a man to me, you abomination!
