In hoping and aiming to answer the age old question, does box office reflect the quality of a film, does making mega-bucks count as the only barometer of quality.

Many would say yes, personally not in my book, but be interesting to see other's view on this one.

Equally, is success judged or assessed by the amount a film makes.

Particularly prevalent given, because of Covid, cinematic 'runs' are being reduced to a matter of weeks currently and how streaming etc. is filling in the narrative.

All money determines is how much mass appeal a movie has.

That's it.

No. Making a lot of money just means the movie is "good enough" for a lot of people. And it's just not movies. It's music, books, even food. I mean, McDonalds is, I think, the biggest restaurant chain in the world, but how many thinks they make the best food? I think you can say that modern blockbusters most of the time are like fast food. It goes down easily and can be satisfying for the moment if you're really hungry. But it's not exactly a unique, memorable culinary experience. Most people just simply prefer to pay for something safe and familiar, something they know there's a good chance they will like.

Well, it also means, because of that mass appeal, we get more of that either in sequel form or more movies like it, for good or bad. Also, the people involved may be able to get more freedom and opportunities to create more on a grander scale.

ie. Without the box office success of The Dark Knight, we don’t get Inception.

Without the box office success of Iron Man, we don’t get the MCU.

Without the box office success of Godfather, we don’t get Apocalypse Now.

Etc.

Good movies flop and bad movies succeed. Box office measures popularity, not quality. The 2 can coincide for sure, but not always.
It seems like the time they coincided the most was 40-50 years ago when the top movies at the box office were also being nominated for Best Picture. The Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders, E.T., etc.
