Some whole foods are cheap. I eat lots of beans and lentils and buying them in bulk at Wild Oats or even bagged is dirt cheap. But some types of produce and organic meats are extremely high. I buy them anyway, but I always think how grateful I am to be able to afford them. I know a lot of people can't. I've been paying $6.00 for a bag of small organic apples. They're one of the fruits I always buy organic, since they absorb higher concentrations of pesticides than say, bananas. A bag lasts me a while, but if I was a single parent with three kids, I wouldn't be buying the organic apples, and it's a shame. When kids are small and they're bodies are still growing is when so many of these chemicals can be particularly harmful.
While you may not be able to afford organic, locally grown produce is often reasonably priced and has less pesticide use then factory farm produced food. If you live in a region where they produce apples you might want to look into that. Plus you really reduce your carbon footprint since the food travels a reduced distance to get to you.
