After muttering about how an AVATAR franchise would make sense and hinting that there could be a trilogy of AVATAR films, James Cameron has confirmed that there will be an AVATAR sequel, fueling speculation about how it might top the original.

Things we do know: There are two planned sequels but they won't be one continuous story, they'll be self-contained. They'll also follow Jake and Neytiri. It could take place around a different moon of Polyphemus this time, although producer Jon Landau has already hinted about exploring Pandora's interior. Some bloggers guess that James Cameron, famously obsessed with water, has an amazing underwater environment mapped out for Pandora. There are also different Na'vi tribes that call the planet their home and we never really got a sense of how intra-species politics work between the different tribes. Cameron confirmed he’s mapped out what will happen in the sequels, although he hasn’t written any scripts yet.

The good news? The sequels won't take four years to make. Cameron has said he can get them out faster than the first AVATAR.

I like the bit about them being self-contained. That's a huge plus, IMO. Too many film sequels try to stretch out their story across several films and end up making a total mess of it.

Lets see what happens.

If they had just panned out the story of Avatar over a few films with little plot turns throughout (like LOTR or Star Wars) I think sequels or a series would have been appropriate, but considering it all wrapped up pretty well I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Officially hyped!!!!!!!

Polyphemus here we come! :indy:

Unnecessary sequel.

First movie was a great film, but should be left as a solo story.

is wasnt meant to be a solo story, he originally want it to be a trilogy

I don't see how this can possibly sustain a trilogy. It's his most original work (in fact I said the man has never had an original idea to save his life just yesterday, before I saw it today) and it's my favorite work of his.

But I can't see anywhere a sequel would go that wouldn't feel been there or done that...let alone 2 sequels.

He's already mapped it out while making this one, and he's practically the king of sequels. There's no doubt in my mind he'll create something new for the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

You can still be self-contained while continuing narrative aspects of a previous film. There are very few trilogies/franchises out there that actually require viewing of the entire material just to watch any single movie.

Will Master Chief visit Pandora?

*Cameron was angry at Halo fanboys for claiming the helicopter designs were ripped off from Halo, specifically the Hornet

The typical formula seems to be to have the first film be self contained and the second film to set up a cliffhanger for the third. I hate that formula.

I'm interested to see more of Pandora for sure. Not sure what he'll come up with as far as the villain is concerned.

Selfridge can still be a villain he and the RDA went back to earth

But see that's treading ground we've already seen? So what they come back to Pandora even stronger? And we basically have the first film all over again?

No thanks.

no, if you read what the first post said, it will travel to other moons

I just realized that the sequel can't be named Avatar 2 since Jake no longer uses an Avatar body.

I hope this doesn't happen to fast. I kind of want to see some other works with Cameron behind them. I mean I love Avatar as much as the next, but I can wait a couple of years to see a sequel. I'm not dying to see more yet and I don't want to get Avatar'd out. I really hope Cameron doesn't follow in Michael Bay's or Sam Raimi's footsteps and spend their time just making sequels to cash out on the franchise.... Then we get a reboot and start all over wasting our time watching the other three movies *cough*Sony*cough*

Cameron already thought of doing 2 more films while making the first one.

Yes, but I would rather wait to see them, rather than next winter see "Na'vi: The I want to hurry up before people forget about Avatar film". I'm just saying personally I would like to wait and not see Cameron just doing Avatar for the next couple of years. It would be nice to see him use his technology on another concept. The man's a genius lets see something else and then we can see the Avatar sequels gradually over time.
