James Cameron is a huge fan of HM magazine and the 1981 animated movie as it's one of his fave animated features and comics. I believe both sources were some of the various inspirations to his new movie with others.
You can tell Avatar was like a big screen issue of HM Magazine with influences from Bernie Wrightsen, Moebius and Richard Corben in some of the landscapes, storyline, scenery, weird creatures, exotic sexy alien girls that are half naked, warriors both male and female, typical militant bad guys, feets of strength, surrealism and that sort of thing.
There are some similarities to Den from Richard Corben with the idea of a weakling who is sent on a new planet to find himself in a bigger new body and new form of himself that is stronger yet finds love in the jungle, joins with a band of warriors and fights against a Tyrant. There's also a bit of Taarna in it with Neytiri being similar as a sexy half naked warrior who is also a good female role model that kicks ass, rides a dragon and the battle between her and Quatrich was a huge homage to that fight scene in HM the movie where Taarna fought the Barbarian lord including a homage to the city attack with the Na'vi village attack.
Cameron has good taste in comics and animated movies.
