Jessica Alba's New Role ... Teaching?

Friday November 17, 9:34 am ET

Actress is Top Pick in NEA's Substitute Educator Day Poll

WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A National Education Association online poll reveals that actress Jessica Alba is the celebrity most respondents would like to see substitute teach for a day.

The star of "Into the Blue" and "Fantastic Four" was the top pick with 46 percent of the vote. The runners-up include Oprah Winfrey (24 percent) followed by Angelina Jolie (14 percent), Will Smith (12 percent) and Andre Agassi (4 percent). NEA received more than 5,000 responses to the poll, which was conducted in advance of Substitute Educators Day on Friday, November 17.

"Although substitute educators play a key role in the classroom, they are often taken for granted," said Reg Weaver, NEA president.

"Our celebrity Substitute Educators Day poll is an excellent way for us to spotlight the collective contributions of substitutes to schools nationwide.

Just as actress Jessica Alba toiled long and hard before achieving stardom, substitute educators work tirelessly -- and often in relative anonymity -- to provide every child with a quality public education."

Public schools currently face a severe substitute educator shortage. In a survey completed by Utah State University, 96 percent of the nation'sschool districts said they had trouble finding substitutes.

So, is there a solution to the shortage? Doug Provencio, who leads NEA's Substitute Teachers Caucus, recommends that districts increase the pay for substitute teachers; offer incentives to substitutes who work a certain number of days in any given year; and provide substitutes with some training -- for example, a course in classroom management -- to ensure their success in the classroom.

"Substitute educators are vital to our schools," said Weaver. "It is critically important -- now more than ever-that we attract more qualified substitute educators by increasing their salaries, offering alluring benefits, and providing additional professional development opportunities."

Created in 2003, Substitute Educators Day is observed on the Friday of American Education Week. It is designed to raise awareness about substitute educators and their need for greater respect and improved wages, benefits and training.

This year's American Education Week's 2006 theme, "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility," represents NEA's vision of calling upon all Americans to do their part in making public schools great for every child so that they can grow and achieve in the 21st century.

The National Education Association is the nation's largest professional employee organization, representing 3.2 million elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty, education support professionals, school administrators, retired educators and students preparing to become teachers.

Jessica Alba Voted Favorite Substitute Teacher

by Eric Anderson
LOS ANGELES (November 15, 2006) -- She's dove "Into the Blue." She's lived in "Sin City" and even showed off her "Fantastic" super powers.
But is Jessica Alba ready to try her hand at… substitute teaching?
If the educators of America have anything to say about it, Miss Alba will soon be heading back to school.
In a recent poll conducted by the National Education Association, Jessica was voted the celebrity people would most like to see substitute teach for a day.
Jessica finished with 46 percent of the vote, followed by Oprah Winfrey (23 percent), Angelina Jolie (14 percent), Will Smith (12 percent) and tennis star Andre Agassi (4 percent).
The online poll surveyed more than 5,000 particpants nationwide and was issued as part of NEA's Substitute Educator Day.
Access Hollywoodcaught up with Jessica during a visit to the set of her new film, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," to get her reaction to the poll results.
"I'm available. That's amazing. Why do they want me to be their substitute teacher?" she laughed. "That's cool. There'd be lots of discussions if I was a substitute teacher. Lots of debating going on."
Jessica recently wrapped producing on "Good Luck Chuck" alongside Dane Cook.
"Just as actress Jessica Alba toiled long and hard before achieving stardom, substitute educators labor tirelessly -- and often in relative anonymity -- to provide every child with a quality public education," NEA president Reg Weaver told Access Hollywood.

Hmmmm....hope she doesn't make out with one her "students". I wonder if JAL will enroll?

Maybe if Alba taught English for a day, JAL would stop his vendetta against grammar.

It is surprising that she was the top choice. I would have thought the poll surveyed teenage students (mostly horny males), but it seems it actually came from educators. "This no make the sense."

Alba is just following Natalie Portman... except Portman is actually qualified to be a professor....

not to mention she could explain all the plot holes in the prequels.

What Alba has is "presence" a quality defined by a performer's ability to command the audience's attention through projection, focus, attention, expression, confidence, and so on which is why she was probably chosen!

Alba's "presence" is fairly limited to her physical attractiveness. It's the only time she's really commanded my attention other than my saying "How did this ***** get this role?"

Yeah I'm sure THAT is why she was chosen.

That doesn't make her qualified or smart enough to be a teacher.

This may have something to do with the choice.

They drew parallels that could be made of any high profile performer, though. None of that is unique to Jessica Alba in the least. She got picked because she's "HAWT" and for really no other reason. Good for them for trying to bring attention to education in a positive light, but maybe they should have gone for a bit brighter bulb.

Unlike you I don't have the ability to read their minds.

I am indeed sad for you, then. Mostly because you seem to think mostly about eating Cheetoh's naked while watching "Fantastic Four" from what I've been able to gather. :down

Any story mentioning the NEA makes me mad. This shows they are not only hurting the educational system, but people of poor tastes.

So...
Is this like one of those threads were you type "T3DDY" and he drops in, but instead we get JAL?

U know I would love to see Paris Hilton teach a class...I would pay real money to see that.

Alba: Kip, I won't have sex with you unless you pass this grammar test.

JAL: Alright than! Your going be in ofr serprize!

2 weeks later

JAL: Well, hello Jessica. How are you doing? Have you graded the tests yet?

But yeah, like Equint said Natalie Portman is actually qualified to teach. She did sub for a class at Columbia U.

Alba didn't go to college. Though, I'm sure JAL will be like "She grajuated frum hi school erly! She's smarterr then Portman. OMG! You guys! "

:woot: Wrong on so many levels.

Jess always seems cool and fun when interviewed, coupling that with her looks and popularity with the age group i expect led to her winning the vote

Is there a Hack Actress 101? Or T&A for Talent class? Then she'd be perfect!
