So I'm currently reading Morrison's landmark run for the first time, and after getting through Rock of Ages I am both confused and enthralled by the needlessly twisting tapestry that Morrison is weaving.

After I make it through his run, should I also continue with Waid's and eventually Kelly's?

Certainly. Waid and Kelly's runs on JLA are fantastic reads and as good as Morissons.

I'm probably going to get crap for this, but my favorite Justice League run was Giffen DeMattes and Maguire's JLI/JLE. Some people say it was campy, but I think there's a difference between having good comic releif and being campy. The issue where J'onn was the only one left to take on a worldwide zombie apocalypse was kind of creepy, really.

You ain't getting crap from me. JLI was my absolute favorite run. Highlights like Metamorpho and Guy's fight, Despero obliterating the Detroit League, Max Lord showing J'onn his abilities for the first time and more. MAN, I loved that run.

"Syndicate Rules" was a great story.

I'm actually a pretty big fan of the first 100 issues or so of the JLA96 run.

Not too sure about Waid's, I only read the Babel arc which is pretty much an essential story to read. As for Kelly though, I loved his work on the JLA, probably some of my favorite stories and definitely one of the best characterizations of Plastic Man. I never cared for the character until I read Kelly's stuff.

Damn right  Skip Clairmont/Byrne's run though. Busiek's run doesn't get the respect it deserves. Read all together, it was pretty damn good.

Plus the characters of the heroes in a group setting made the book much more interesting to read. Batman the authoritarian, Guy the bully, Beetle & Booster the class clowns, Mr. Miracle the new kid in school, Marvel the naive do-gooder, John the father-figure. Each character got a chance to shine and show how they worked (or failed to work) as a team.

Plus it was downright funny and entertaining.

Morrison's run was fantastic IMO and Waid's was really great. Kelly's had some cool parts and overall good stories worth picking up. Then I would skip Austen's and Claremont's stories and continue with Busiek's great story ,"Syndicate Rules", and end with the even greater one by Johns and Heinberg, "Crisis of Conscience" (you should read Identity Crisis before this one).

Tower of Babel was good, so was Terror Incognita, and so was Obsidian Age, and Trial by Fire...

Morrison's run was typical 90s drivel at best in my opinion.I enjoy Morrison's writing, but his JLA wasn't particularly exciting or engaging to me.

I've been meaning to check out Giffen/DeMatteis.

It wasn't an actual run,but Waid did this beauty called "JLA Year One".

Actually, JLA YEAR ONE was great too... i agree...

Why don't you find it "exciting" ? "If Flash run fast enough in this direction while GL takes the moon while J'onn J'onzz read the mind of a thousand million people, maybe Superman will be able to win the race against a human representation of the destiny of the earth!!" That is entertaining, isn't it ?

JLA had a long string of great runs once Morrison hit the books. Honestly, I didnt care for Rock of Ages, but the majority of his stuff was gold, particularly the Prometheus arc. I probably liked Waids run even more since it was a bit more reality grounded (pitty he got rid of the second string characters though). Kellys run was also damn good. His Obsidian Age arc was incredible and made Nightwing member AND leader of the JLA. Busiek did some great stuff too.

Hell, even Chuck Austen's JLA arc wasnt bad. The last good JLA arc (thats collected anyways) is Crisis of Concience by Johns. Dont read the stuff after, it was just crap. Those were almost a decade of great stories. Makes me realize how much the current roster sucks without Wally, Kyle, Jonn and Aurther.

I can see where you're coming from, but I wouldn't blame Morrison for any faults the book may have had. I think editorial was probably breathing down his neck since he was using all the best toys from DCs toybox.

Grant wasn't as free to do whatever he wanted like when he was on a throw away book like Animal Man, but he gets the job done for JLA.

If you like Morrisons JLA pick up 'JLA: Earth 2' especially if you're going to read 'Syndicate Rules' by Busiek. If you don't think you'll get too confused, give 'DC: 1,000,000' a try, another great concept by Morrison.

Glad you enjoy the world of the JLA. It has a very interesting and varied history regarding the various incarnations.

Definitly give some back issues of the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League a try. Solid stories with great, clever dialogue, and laugh out loud humor.

Subjective my friend.

I loved Morrison's run, wasn't too fond of Kelly's (although it could have just been some of that art that turned me away). I despised DC: 1,000,000. JLI/JLE was gold.

I actually never had a "favorite" JLA era. Morrison's was utter genius in the structural sense so if I had to pick I'd pick his, but I'm not too crazy about some of his characterizations.

Waid had some great ideas and awesome plotlines, but I'm even less crazy about his characterizations.

I really like Kelly's run, though some of the plots felt weird.
