If I'm not mistaken, usually April is a bad month for 'bigger' movies due to college students.

Oh yeah. I was one once... April was chock-full of due dates for term papers, projects, tests, final exams... not to mention commencement.

Whatever big Disney or Touchstone flick is coming out this year, it more than likely will be stuck on there.

My bet is on Pirates. This trailer would be right at home on that one. :)

Ok I take back what I said, ok it's not in post-production and Stanton is halfway through the movie with this digital photgraphy throughout the whole 2011.
I'm confused since he won't need the actors for the digital photography so I guess it's something with the green screen or the sets and the effects of the movie I guess.

Here's the thing i don't understand...or better yet needs clarification.
JOhn Carter of Mars is a biig budget VFX movie. They're shooting all the way till the end of 2011. And Disney just bumbed the release date to March 2012. Either they have quite some VFX finished or are currently working on the VFX or they mut have one heck of a team to develop the VFX in 3 months time ( the end of 2011 till the release date).
Seriously someone help me out with this

i think Stanton used wrong words. i dont know what he meant.

there is no way that they would be filming for so long. makes no sense. right now they have to be in post production. and IMO they are.

i think digital production is when you are using the virtual camera to compose the full CGI shots. remmber like Cameron on Avatar.

Huh ok, if that's what he meant then I guess it makes sense. I would've been worried if they entered post-production quite late or else they need a good team to do a good job for the vfx for the movie, or else they shouldn't pushed forward the release date.

More details about the Plot:

The movie begins with Edgar Race Burroughs (Daryl Sabara) traveling to Virginia to claim ownership of the property of his uncle, John Carter, who has recently passed away. While going trough Carter's personal belongings, Burroughs finds a book written by him and called "A Princess of Mars". That's where our story begins.

During the American Civil War, John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) abandonds his outpost after losing faith in what he was fighting for and takes shelter among the Apache Indians. General Willis (Bryan Cranston) is sent after him, as Carter's is one of the most skilled soldiers and necessary to fight the Indians. Willis locates Carter and attempts to coherce him into returning, but the two are ambushed by a rival tribe. Carter takes shelter in a cave and is somehow transported to planet Mars - Called Barsoom by its inhabitants - where he is captured by the Tharks, four-armed, green-skinned giants commanded by Sarkoja (Polly Walker) and Tal Hajus (Thomas Haden Church).

In captivity, Carter befriends Thark warrior Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe), who differs from his peers for his capacity to love, and his daughter Sola (Samantha Morton). He also meets Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), the princess of the kingdom of Helium, that is being attacked by the rival kingdom of Zodangan, led by Prince Sab Than (Dominic West). All tribes of Mars are fighting for control of the planet's reservations of water and air, with the venerated, God-like Therns commanded by Matai Shang (Mark Strong) manipulating the entire conflict from behind the curtain.

Falling in love with Thoris, Carter promises to deliver her back to her kingdom and her grandfather, Tardos Mors (Cierán Hinds). To accomplish this, him, Thoris, Tars and Sola count with Kantos Khan (James Purefoy), pilot of the spaceship Xavarian, on a race against both time and the Thark and Zodangan armies. In the process, Carter realizes that there are still things worth fighting for and slowly rises into becoming Barsoom's greatest hero.

Wow, this thread is almost 7 years old.

They've been working on this a long time. :p

Groovy. Sounds close enough to the original story but enough changes in all the right places. One thing that concerns me, though is if
Tars Tarkas knows Sola is his daughter. I've always found that only her knowing it at first was one of the more endearing asPects of the story.

you think they are not showing any promor pics because they are so CGI heavy?

Damn I'm glad I clicked on this thread! I had no idea Disney was involved in this project; I thought I remembered reading this was some really low budget affair.

Anyway I picked up the first five books off ebay a few weeks back and I'm just about finished with the first one. Not a huge fan of ERB's writing but I dig his version of Mars and the film shouldn't want for lack of action and cool set pieces.

Very excited about this one.

I can't wait for this. Hopefully it will kick off a new wave of blockbuster space opera/planetary romance and we'll see a Lensman movie and, finally, a new Flash Gordon. Oh yes.

That's not this version. The low budget one you were thinking of was made by The Asylum. Behold:

That's the one, hehe :down

Just checked out the cast list for this. There's some good names in there, including Polly Walker and James Purefoy! I just finished Rome a few days ago and they were my two favorites on that show.

And Mark strong too, holy hell! :awesome:

Collider Exclusive:
Composer Michael Giacchino Talks SUPER 8, JOHN CARTER OF MARS and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL
Have you started work on John Carter of Mars yet or are you still in the discussion phase?

Giacchino: Haven’t started anything on that musically. They’re working their butts off just trying to get that together. They shot it and now they’re in post and dealing with animation and all kinds of stuff, so there’s a lot to do before I actually sit down.
