John Carter : A Princess of Mars

Two things.

That doesn't look like Mars. Prince of Persia never felt like it was set in Persia.

Nope, never watched a western in my life.

Last I recall Mars isn't populated with livng people but your willing to let that slide so why are you getting hung up on how Mars looks. The way Mars looks in real life is connected with the fact nothong cant live on it. A haspittable Mars would look different. For beings to evolve the planet would have had to go through a different life cycle than it has in real life. Mars would need a thicker atmosphere changing the look of the sky and even the light on mars. This would change how the planet turns out even if its only slight there would be differences. For various reasons it wouldnt be as red as it actually is either. So Mars in this movie would actually look different. But most of all this is freaking fanasty not a documentary on mars.

I normally hate teasers but found this one pretty excellent. There was definitely a LOT more they could have shown (if the effects were finished) but this whet my appetite just enough :)

Notice how he stopped replying when you made perfect sense? I love when they do that. lol

Great teaser, great song too. Gonna have to download that. I'm a big fan of Peter Gabriel anyways. :)

Had? Its one thing to be disappointed but don't write it off already.

I don't blame him, the movie should look expensive and the movie takes place on a different planet yet it doesn't look like it's expensive. It looks like a place that you would find on earth wayyyyy too much.

Wow, this looks fantastic. I had little to no interest beforehand but this shot up my must see list. I really loved the restraint of the teaser actually; showed just enough to give a hint of some epic stuff but not too much. The Peter Gabriel cover fit quite well too.

Another thing that I really liked was that it seemed it a bit more mature. Not dark and gritty really, but more like it's being treated seriously and that there's some real weight and substance to the movie. With Stanton and Brad Bird both looking like they made awesome live action debuts I'm looking forward to other Pixar directors branching out soon.

Yeah 'cuz expensive shots that look nothing like Earth worked out really well for Green Lantern.

The problem is it looks like it is set on Earth. What is the point of making a story about a far away place if it looks like a not so extravagant bit of Earth? I don't even like Avatar, but I can appreciate that aspect of it.

I have a life you know. This site isn't the only thing I pay attention to. Did you want me to stick around for an hour waiting?

Marvolo made some excellent points about Mars and you just ignored them. :down

I found myself lying prone upon a bed of yellowish, moss-like vegetation which stretched around me in all directions for interminable miles. I seemed to be lying in a deep, circular basin, along the outer verge of which I could distinguish the irregularities of low hills. -ERB

How dare they stick to the source material. :cmad:

Yeah, and nobody's ever tried to set a film on Mars that looks exactly like any desert on Earth:

Look, people figured out that there aren't *really* canals on Mars a long time ago, and that the atmosphere and planetary environment aren't even remotely hospitable to humanity. Still, Martian fantasies like Burroughs' and Bradbury's continue to captivate the imagination, and people's willing suspension of disbelief towards Barsoom and The Martian Chronicles goes way beyond just the nuts-n-bolts scientific realities.

It's fantasy --- always was, always will be. Trying to apply realism to that is like trying to apply realism to Tolkien or Robert E. Howard.

What? His points don't hold much weight, because as he points out it is fantasy. It is like complaining about sound in space in Star Wars or how any human is able to breath on Kamino.

My point isn't that it doesn't look like actual Mars, but that the film doesn't look like it is set on another planet, but simply on Earth decorated. Their version of Mars looks like Utah with sets and CGI plastered over it.

That's the one I have.
Oh my! It is! I just realized after looking at it several times. Probably going to get that one.

I hope this is good, so more of Pixar's imagination can stretch to live-action. If you get what I mean.

It looks just like it's supposed to look, like the Mars from the books. If you can't deal with that then there's nothing I can for ya son.

I know.....the books describe Mars as a desert like planet with some strange plants (not a beautifuly colored jungle with millions of flourescent insects flying around like in AVATAR)....and people are upset that the pictures from the movie are of a desert like planet with some strange plants here and there.

They're saying it's set on another planet so it should look more wildly exotic....uh, not if this is the way it was described in the books.

I've been facepalming myself so much the last couple of days my head hurts.

I think Mars(or should I say Barsoom) looks great and I can't wait to see more! :)

It's typical though IF the next trailer turns out to be awesome, then all of a sudden the same people go gaga over it. The same BS when down with with Cowboys & Aliens ad Star Trek.

Fandom is circular. you should know that.

Tatoonie looks like a "desert planet". Nor is it "wildly exotic". This looks like something you can see on a site seeing tour.

See why I've tried to avoid this thread? Being criticized because it looks like the source material (a source not read by the person criticizing). Sure it doesn't look like Mars, but that's the point. There's old literature that talks about the moon being made of cheese, we know it's not true, but it's still a great story for kids.

Looks good. I'm curious, given the fact that we know now that Mars doesn't look like that, do you think that maybe the reason they removed "Mars" from the title is because they're going to make Barsoom a planet in some other galaxy? I guess it doesn't really matter, I'm just curious.

Either way, looks epic. Can't wait to see more. I especially dig the alien ships.

Then maybe my problem is with the source material, which is fine. Doesn't change how I feel about the look of this film.

while I agree that there wasn't much to look at, with an understated teaser like this. we haven't seen any of the cities and other aliens. Unless you're too steadfast to notice how many times I've said this to you! ;)
