the more realistic something looks the more time is spend on. .and the desert is the perfect place to spend a lot of time at making objects look like they have been there for years. randomness
on Netflix they said that this is mocap ? maybe they used mocap because they wanted all the actors to perform . ILM are good animators but they dont have animators like PIxar who have been for the last 10 years animating 100% performances.
i wouldnt be suprised if the budget is huge. with 3D theaters it makes sense that animated/mocap movie have become more expensive. they get more money with 3D. so why not?
Here's a interview with Gore Vebinski on Rango
It's not mo-cap. So ILM's animators are completely key framing this

With Johnny on board, the rest of the cast was assembled, and gathered on an LA soundstage where Verbinski scheduled a twenty-day record. In a change from traditional animation voice work, the majority of Rango's audio was captured in the same room, at the same time. Just because it was an animated movie, I didnt want to give up the techniques that were developed shooting live action, Verbinski says. To optimize the possibility of capturing the awkward moment. The intuitive response When shooting live action, youre encouraging that sort of chaos and youre waiting with your butterfly net to capture that moment. Everything in an animated film is manufactured, everything is conceived, theres no accidents. So they can get very clinical. For his unique recording sessions, Verbinski encouraged the actors to do whatever it took to get themselves in character. He threw his cast together, micd them, encouraged them to explore the space, and searched for a kinetic spark on the audio track Its not motion capture, he says. Its emotion capture.
