Johnny Depp is 'Rango'

the more realistic something looks the more time is spend on. .and the desert is the perfect place to spend a lot of time at making objects look like they have been there for years. randomness

on Netflix they said that this is mocap ? maybe they used mocap because they wanted all the actors to perform . ILM are good animators but they dont have animators like PIxar who have been for the last 10 years animating 100% performances.

i wouldnt be suprised if the budget is huge. with 3D theaters it makes sense that animated/mocap movie have become more expensive. they get more money with 3D. so why not?

Here's a interview with Gore Vebinski on Rango

It's not mo-cap. So ILM's animators are completely key framing this :wow:
With Johnny on board, the rest of the cast was assembled, and gathered on an LA soundstage where Verbinski scheduled a twenty-day “record.” In a change from traditional animation voice work, the majority of Rango's audio was captured in the same room, at the same time. “Just because it was an animated movie, I didn’t want to give up the techniques that were developed shooting live action,” Verbinski says. “To optimize the possibility of capturing the awkward moment. The intuitive response… When shooting live action, you’re encouraging that sort of chaos and you’re waiting with your butterfly net to capture that moment. Everything in an animated film is manufactured, everything is conceived, there’s no accidents. So they can get very clinical.” For his unique recording sessions, Verbinski encouraged the actors to do whatever it took to get themselves in character. He threw his cast together, mic’d them, encouraged them to explore the space, and searched for a kinetic spark on the audio track… “It’s not motion capture,” he says. “It’s emotion capture.”

I love this director.

Love the Fear and Loathing reference.

Looks like a cute movie, I'll be going to see definitely.

In the bay area Pixar animators and CG artists work at ILM and vice versa. Some even go to Disney and Weta. They go where the work is, when they can get it, I'm not just talking about the big wigs.

BTW, Lucas Animation in Singapore is also working on this film too. The Singapore Studio is also doing visual effects work for ILM as well.

"ILM worked on 535 out of 1,000 shots, collaborating with ILM Singapore (under the leadership of Mohen Leo), which contributed roto, layout, matchmove suit animation and compositing throughout."

I don't know. The material could be too weird for kids to be interested in it. But if this catches my interest more and if gets good reviews, I just might see it.

Absolutely loved the shot of Rango slamming into Duke's shark toward the end.

It's got Johnny Depp as a cute, funny-looking talking animal. That's pretty much all you to get kids. :woot:

Saw this again in front of TLA. I just love the look of it.

Anything new with this?

I was super hyped when the trailer came out.

Theatrical Trailer The trailer got me interested, it seems fun and the animation visually looks different, which is nice.

The trailer actually made me laugh a couple of times. Something trailers for 3D animated films do.....not do.

i think the story is cliche but i expect it to be fun. Depps voice is very good and fits with the animal.

that said i dont think this will work with kids.i think it is to realistic for kids. i think this movie will underperform since kids will not be interested.

it looks very realistic. and since it loks realistic it means that its very expensive.

Yeah, it seems a bit risky for a animated kids movie since it has its own style with the tone and visually with the animation , the case could be similar to "Legend of the Guardians" but I hope I'm wrong, I hope it will be a entertaining movie nonetheless.

Yeah, it's sort of cliche as dark b said, but every Western that's been made in the past twenty years has been pretty much cliche. That's why we love 'em.

I know I'm definitely seeing this.

That's pretty cool how they filmed this and then used that as the basis for the animation.

I love the realistic animals in this.

Good to see some innovation in this tired genre.

Not exactly a new technique but interesting none the less. I actually hope they add the full 'human' version as a DVD feature, be interesting to watch.
