From Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Academy Award®-winning 'The Great Beauty,' ‘The Young Pope’ tells the controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII's pontificate. The ten-episode series stars Jude Law as the complex and conflicted Pius XIII, the first American pope. The cast includes Diane Keaton as Sister Mary, an American nun living in Vatican City, as well as Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli and James Cromwell.

Praise!

Let the religious folks get angry.

Trailer was beautiful.

Jude Law's The Knick!(?)

Oh I can't wait to read the Catholic Church's response to this. :D

Well, if they don't like this show, they can get rid of it by transferring it to another parish.

So it's Houe of Cards...with the Pope?

Calling him "the first American Pope" is a little misleading, as he was never an actual legitimate Pope.

First episode was pretty good. The opening was beautiful.

Jude Law loves this role.

No, it's not. It's the fictional story of the first American Pope elected in the Vatican. Who happens to share a name with the dude you're referring to.

No, it's not. It's the true story of a guy who declared himself Pope to his fringe followers.
You're thinking of Lucian Pulvermacher, who made himself the "pope" of a conclave in Washington. The TV show is about Lenny Belardo, a fictitious character who becomes the real pope in Vatican City. They both take the name Pius XIII, but that's where the similarities end.

Been catching up with Paolo Sorrentino's The Young Pope. My words -- Jude Law was absolutely superb. The last two episodes were amazing, Sorrentino's The Young Pope is a masterpiece in most respect --excellent soundtracks, cinematography, characters and top notch dialogue. I especially love Law's Lenny Belardo aka Pius XIII address to the Cardinals in episode #5 (it's on youtube if you're interested in some spoilers).

Here's one of intros (different for some episodes):

Is this supposed to be a mini series or could it possibly continue in a 2nd season? I'm looking forward to watching it when it airs on HBO.

Definitely excited for this. I'm glad it's a mini-series, with the potential for a second season.

More US shows should take a page out of the BBC book, with seasons consisting of 3-6 episodes. It allows for much tighter and exciting storytelling, with less filler.

Tonight's episode really dragged. I preferred the first two.

I get a bit of a Boardwalk Empire vibe with that intro, maybe just because it's the main character strutting confidently. As for the show itself, it's decent. Wouldn't call it amazing, but I like it enough. I get a bit of a Coen Brothers' vibe from some of the dark humor, though.

Just finished the season tonight. I'm pretty sure it's a masterpiece. Their direction is masterful, the performances are superb, and the story is fascinating and powerful.

Yeah, I don't know what I expected, but this show was pretty great. Great visuals, great music, loved many of the speeches. :) I'd be happy to watch a second season.
