Clooney is the only one attached at the moment.

I think we can expect a few more of the cast announced within the next month.

'Twilight' scene-stealer Anna Kendrick to costar opposite George Clooney

Nov 19, 2008, 08:00 PM | by Nicole Sperling

Twilight scene-stealer Anna Kendrick (she plays Bella's boy-crazy friend Jessica) has already earned the notice of more than just the series' die-hard fans. The 23-year-old actress, who until now was best known for the indie comedy Rocket Science, has caught the eye of writer-director Jason Reitman (Juno) and his next leading man: George Clooney. Kendrick will star opposite Clooney in Up in the Air for Paramount Pictures, which is based on the 2001 novel by Walter Kirn. Clooney plays Ryan, an unapologetic corporate downsizer with an obsession for collecting frequent-flier miles, while Kendrick tackles the role of an an up-and-coming employees who threatens to ground Ryan's quest for airline miles by automating his job. Looks like Kendrick's career is taking flight.

Vera Farmiga (The Departed) will star opposite George Clooney in Jason Reitman's Up in the Air for Paramount Pictures and Montecito, reports Variety.

The story centers on a human resources executive whose only joy in life comes from the prospect of notching his millionth frequent-flyer mile, a goal he pursues with zeal as the rest of his life falls apart because he is constantly on the road.

Farmiga will play a businesswoman who develops a romantic relationship with Clooney's character through meetings in airports and hotels around the country.

Reitman adapted the screenplay from Walter Kirn's novel of the same name.

Shooting starts in late February in St. Louis, Miami and Las Vegas.
She's a good actress, this is shaping up nicely.

Sounds promising. I look forward to it, as I think Reitman has made two of the best comedies of this decade.

Jason Bateman Goes Up in the Air

March 2, 2009

Jason Bateman has signed on for Up in the Air, the adaptation of the Walter Kirn novel that director Jason Reitman is filming for DreamWorks and the Montecito Picture Co.

George Clooney stars as a corporate downsizer who is obsessed with collecting frequent flyer miles at the expense of having a life. Bateman will play his boss.

Bateman just signed to star with Jennifer Aniston in the Mandate Pictures comedy Baster, which he'll begin shooting later this month after completing Up in the Air.

Interesting trailer, this looks more serious in tone than Reitman's last 2 movies.

Looks awesome! Reitman + Clooney + Farmiga + Bateman!!!!! Plus I heard that Anna Kendrick schick is good in it.

Reitman is an excellent director. I will probably see this film.

TIFF just pushed this movie into Oscar contention baby!

Saw it this afternoon. It's very good. Although I don't think it's the best of the year as the National Board of Review said yesterday. George Clooney is his usual charming self, but the highlight is Anna Kendrick.

I think it's playing now in LA. But tonight I'm going to see The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Before the economy went down the tubes, yeah, I loved going to LA for limited releases or midnight screenings of The Room (awesomely bad movie) but not as much.

Up in the Air review

George Clooney plays a traveling business consultant hired to terminate employees for other companies and ready them for the path of job hunting. Clooney plays a relic, so to speak, fighting for his job against the ever evolving state of technology. Clooney decides to partner up with the young revolutionary, played by Anna Kendrick, taking her on a cross country trip to see how his job is done and teach her about the finer things about living on the road. Together they share life experiences and relationship advice.

George Clooney is an old-fashioned Hollywood player. He brings an incredible amount of charisma, grace, and machismo to the screen, and hits all his beats. If the movie was to rest solely on his shoulders it would be equally good. This is one of many roles Clooney was born to play. His profession has evolved to this point, a relic of the old ways being forced out by the corporate culture yet hangs on by a thread only to come out on top every time. He is a lovable jackass, but one that shows just the right amount of heart at the right time for us to never give up hope for him. He quietly evolves into something he never thought he'd be.

Luckily, Clooney does not have to go it alone. He has been surrounded by one of the better supporting casts this year. Anna Kendrick shows immense potential past her teeny bopper vampire flick. Vera Farmiga is completely relatable making her eventual resolution that much more surprising. Jason Bateman, Zach Galinfinakis, J. K. Simmons, and Sam Elliot make memorable turns. Maybe just because of their familiar faces, but none the less. Danny McBride really surprised me making a short but poignant cameo with the right amount of humor. More interesting is the inclusion of real life unemployed people given the opportunity to say whatever they wanted to say to those who fired them into the camera. Real emotions from real people.

The message is simple. The people we love and trust are a bigger part of our lives than we will ever realize. The value of human connectedness is not trivial. This is the film's greatest strength. Not the message itself, but how it depicts it. Never is there a lecture on the message, in fact, the lectures in the film seem to be for the total opposite. Clooney preaches the freedom of living on the road, meeting new people. He reminds me of Edward Norton at the beginning of Fight Club with his "single serving friends." But then there is the glaring realization written all over Clooney's face. An epiphany that lasts a second where Clooney stops talking and the message becomes so evidently clear. It lacks a lot of the pretentiousness that we have come to expect from Hollywood, due in part to what should be an unsatisfying ending feeling quite the opposite.

The movie is well-paced and light-hearted. It's silent moments are just as engrossing as its talking points. Clooney continues to prove that no one is quite as capable of carrying a screenplay as he is, yet the supporting cast and Reitman's keen eye keep up more than effectively. The setting and America's present economic climate will make this a film that defines the decade as a whole.

9/10
