Just how did Basinger get the role of Vicki Vale?

At the end of the day Basinger did a good job in the role and is actually the best of the love interests in all batfilms IMO and that includes Holmes in Begins.

Nicole Kidman as Chase beats all... including Catwoman and Rachel.

To me it seems like these various love interests for Batman have been pretty disposable and interchangeable, like Bond girls. Sometimes I feel like the results would be pretty much the same regardless of who was playing who (but I'm still glad Annette Benning ultimately didn't play Catwoman, that would not have worked at all).
