Perhaps someone has already brought this up, but if not here we go...

Most people automatically compare Karen with Jarvis (obviously), but I don't think the similarities hold up. Specifically, Jarvis actively solves problems for Tony but Karen doesn't seem to do the same.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but here are several examples. During the ferry scene, Karen tells Peter "Good job, 98% webbed up" or something similar while Jarvis would have just taken over and ensured all needed spots were hit. During the gas station scene when Peter learns he was all of the new web shooting functionalities, Karen is seemingly not able to switch to the best one for the situation. Finally, when he is locked in the storage facility and trying to get out, Karen cannot work out the code, when Jarvis most certainly would have cracked it in seconds.

Now obviously there would have been a rightful outrage if Karen "took over" everything, but I think she was included as a clever plot device specifically to MIRROR Peter Parker/Spider-Man from the comics. Peter does ALOT of thinking in the comics (overthinking many times) and is always questioning himself and what is the right thing to do in every situation. I think Karen is included in the movie so that Peter can have these same conversations with "himself" (Karen mostly just agrees with what he is saying anyways - she is in actuality standing in for Peter's own mind/consciousness). In this way the writers CAN have Peter think to himself without the boringness of actually listening to a character think all movie, as well as without making Peter insane by talking to himself all movie.

Thoughts?

I think thematically, that's pretty much what they were aiming for. I mean, not *entirely*, there is also a good part of "Karen's sensibilities are Tony's, not Peter's", hence the Instant Kill Mode. But 'synthetic thought bubbles' were definitely part of the goal.
