Ken Ham vs Bill Nye (Is creation a viable model of origins?)

Meh, I'm not gonna argue. I'll take Teelie's approach  I just know what I myself believe. But I also know that I have enough sense to let people make up their own damn minds about things, all I can do is show by example. It's not any of our places to "convert" anyone to any belief, all we can do is say "Hey dude, check this out. It's pretty cool and there's a good message in there too."

And the chips shall fall where they may.

I'm not that calcuating. Sometimes I'll just blindly wander into a thread and trip on something and start yelling randomly at people too.

I watched Ken Ham's creationist video as you can't debate without knowing both sides.... while some of it makes sense... he overlooks, trivializes, and just plain ignores things to make his theories work.

I will admit the Platypus song his friend Buddy does is catchy though:

Let's see, I predict any actual facts/evidence will fall on deaf ears and dismissed with arguments like - well in the Bible one day might mean two days, or a bazillion days or anything else I want, you don't really know, so your "facts" are meaningless.

And unless they set perimeters between the difference and evidence towards abiogenesis and evolution, the debate is already screwd as they haven't agreed on what they are debating and will be arguing two different things.

Ending with - you and science can't prove god doesn't exist, so I win!

Yes Bill Nye is wasting his time.

Could you give this guy a little more then generalizing like that? Clearly you are an evolutionist, but your view of the other side is why it's impossible to have discussions about this stuff.

Nicholas don't be an instigator!! :argh:

mother of God...the only person to call me Nicholas is my mom when she's incredibly mad at me...I haven't heard Nicholas in quite some time!

Mondragon, he clearly doesnt like talking to creationists by his tone, so he generalizes what he thinks this mans discussion is going to be like. Clearly being biased to one side, which just goes to show my very first point.

Some people on SHH should watch this debate and take some notes. Hopefully they'll respect one another and have a calm debate while acknowledging one another's views, and accepting them.

Mondragon is a tad touchy whenever this comes up. He's like the Anti-SentinelMind.

:oldrazz:

I for one will just like to see Bill Nye on TV once again! I've missed him.

*Sigh*

I still don't understand why there even has to be "debates" with creationists.

It's just so wrong. Denying evolution is like denying gravity.

If the two were to come in direct contact with one another it would be most unfortunate to anyone within a 25 mile radius.

Are they the SHH's version of Ken Ham vs Bill Nye?

Neither of these guys is going to convince the other of anything..

Yup. You can't have a debate when one side can constantly shift the goal posts and say, "but you can't prove that my "science/evidence" is wrong!" "A day might mean a million years, or it might not...it is whatever I need it to be to justify my position."

All I know is that time in relation to God (or whatever you choose to believe) is eons longer than we can possibly imagine. So while I believe that God created everything in 6 days, I don't believe it was literally six HUMAN days, as we would perceive it.

Besides I think somewhere in the Bible it says that in heaven a second for them is about a thousand years for us, or something along those lines.

As a Christian myself, I most definitely third this!!!

Because some of us are stubborn, Pinchy. Evolution is a tool of creation, that's how I've always seen it.

See? You can compromise WITHOUT compromising your beliefs!! What a world we live in! :woot:

I have no problem with that line of thinking at all. If people want to believe a god/goddess "kickstarted" evolution or had his/her hand in it or guides it, all the power to ya.

It's the people that outright deny evolution and claim the Earth is less than 10,000 years old that I have a problem with. Especially when they try to undermine real science and insert their nonsense into textbooks.

Im pretty okay with a higher power (on most days), and when i was a hard core christian i just thought that when the bible told of God saying "Let there be light" it meant the big bang or the moment our young universe burst into being. Ive never understood the downright denial of cosmological evolution and biological evolution or how anyone could take the creation story literally.

Biological and cosmological evolution would be a tool used by the higher power to build the universe. They arent tools of deceit and means for the devil to draw us from the path of god. Frankly i think it would be insulting to a god to call one of its coolest natural mechinations a lie. That is if this higher being cares what we think.

I don't think it's so much that he cares what we think so much as it is him saying "Dudes! I made you this awesome place for you guys to chill and experience life, just because I think you're cool. But no keggers."

:hehe:

I just get annoyed when people try to state 'facts' with no actual factual backing. Like not taking fossil evidence into consideration when stating that we just popped into existence and cracking jokes about the 'incredible missing link that would prove all theories of evolution but has yet to show'.

I'm perfectly fine if people want to believe whatever as long as they aren't trying to deny vast collections of opposing scientific evidence to the contrary.
