Kick Ass 2 announcement coming soon

Just got back from seeing it. Sadly, I will say that the movie isn't quite as good as the first movie. The main reason is the fact that the humor/ tone isn't as fun as the first. The first mixed humor and drama well and in kick ass 2 it's a mixed bag. However, I thought the action scenes were decent enough and I didn't even notice the shakey cam most people critics and fans are complaining about. Hats off to Jim Carey as Colonel Stars and Stripes who sadly, only has about 10 mins of screen time if that. Also, Christopher Mintz Pleasze ( sp?) does a decent job as The Mother*****er.

I don't know how accurate this movie is to the comic but I thought the violence wasn't that bad. I heard the Kick Ass 2 comic is disturbing with rape, kids getting killed etc. So I thought this movie was gonna be really pushing it but it didn't. The violence was almost tame really. The way Jim Carey was making it out to be some over the top gorefest which isn't the case. Some characters could have been cut from the movie like Tod and Katie even though they both have little screen time, it was still really unesscary. Hit Girl should have had a little bit more time in costume but that's not big issue. Overall, I give this a 7/10

O yea did anyone else think it was kinda of pedo to have
Hit Girl/Mindy kiss Dave at the end? Chole is 15 in real life I think and Araron is I assume well into his 20's. Made sense in the story but kinda weird and pedo lol.

Just got back home from seeing it!

The movie pretty much met my expectations, which means it's not close to being as good as the first one, but it's still fun.

I don't think it deserves the current 27% rating at Rotten Tomatoes. I think it's because everyone expects every movie/sequel to be amazing, and this one is just good. Good is fine by me.

I think the main problems I had with the movie were that it lacked the satirical tone of the Kick-Ass 1 (which I thought was perfectly handled in that movie), and I felt that some of the jokes fell flat. Trust me, though, there's plenty of jokes that work!

I think the acting was really well-done in this movie. I don't see a weak link. Jim Carrey was great (as much as I hate to admit it), Christopher Mintz-Plasse looked like he was having a blast, and Chloe Moretz gives another great performance as Hit-Girl.

All in all, I'd say that this is a worthy sequel. Some of the tonal problems I have with the movie have to do with the plot (which you really couldn't change, given the source material). It plays out as a more conventional superhero movie rather than a satirical one, which is fine, but not as good. I understand why that had to be, though. You introduce super villains into the picture, you're gonna need some conventional superheroism to combat it.

Oh, and one final thought: Mother Russia was badass and awesome.

At this point I'm kind of feeling like it's gonna be a robocop compared to robocop 2 type of feeling with this. Luckily I like Robocop 2 so I hope I'm right.

hopefully there are some consequences to the evil actions undertaken by the villains. But mindy deserves to have a better life than to be a vigilante killer for the rest of her life.

I really liked this. The first one is miles better in basically every way, but this is in no way necessary of the 27% it has on RT. However, complaints include but are not limited to:

Too fast paced, was too short and edited too much.
Some poor CGI
armless mother f-er?

Otherwise, 8/10

Caught this at a free screening last week, while I didn't love the first kick ass, i found it to be entertaining. Having said that i knew to walk in with low expectations to this one, and no surprise, its a joyless film. With limited screen time, Jim carrey was the standout. I'm Happy i didn't have to pay. Now I'm worried about what Wadlow will do with "X-Force".

4/10

Kick Ass 2 is not a good movie. I didn't think it was terrible , but it failed to capture what was so good about the first film. The actors seem to be giving it their best. Unfortunately most of the characters became one dimensional. Also the action seems way over the top compared to the first film. Although there are several things I liked. It was fun when Kick Ass started to form a team and join the Colonel's group. Mother Russia was awesome and I did laugh at a lot of the jokes.

What is the command Jim Carrey gives to Eisenhower

I thought it was a great one.

I thought it was hilarious and enjoyed it more then the KA2 comic. The whole cast was great imo.

I didn't like the KA2 comic to begin with and the negative scores put my expectations even lower, so I was really surprised at how much fun it was. My whole theatre was eating it all up.

My complaints where I wish there was more of the Hit Girl comic included which was far superior then the Kick-Ass 2 book, and that the ending put out a bit more. It was on the anticlimatic side and the end battle could have been cooler. I'm guessing the budget was an issue there. Overall I had a real good time though. Lotta funny **** here.

Saw it earlier tonight. My quick thoughts:

1) Not nearly as good as a first (kind of should go without saying but...)

2) It is kind of a mess in terms of direction and editing. I actually think the script is fine (save for the "sick stick" scene in the cafeteria) and works as an adaptation of the two graphic novels it used as its source. Indeed the weakest sequence in the film, Mother Russia's attack on suburban cops during the [blackout]rape, or fakeout, but still too dark here[/blackout] scene is just too bleak and incongruous with the rest of it. And the drama beats do not work at all, even though the acting, especially from Moretz and Johnson is fine. And the movie is better whenever Hit-Girl or Mindy are on the screen. But...

3) It is still very funny and simply as a big fan of the original, I enjoyed this movie. On its own, it is completely inept and it cannot stand on its own...but as a follow-up to the first, I enjoyed seeing these characters again and where they went. In fact...

4) I would love to see a Kick-Ass 3. I thought the "cliffhanger" in the film is much better than it is in the Kick-Ass 2 graphic novel. Just please do not let Jeff Wadlow direct again.

Seriously, I thought his script was fine, but it needed to be ironed out a little bit more. Already the way it handled the Katie/Night-***** storylines were better. But in the first film I genuinely felt empathy for Chris D'Amico and was truly sad to see Big Daddy die. In this film, all the dramatic story beats, most especially [blackout]Dave's dad dying[/blackout] fell flat, because it felt arbitrary. The "Superbad" humor was still there and still fun in that raunchy way. But it never achieves that level of surprising depth and unbridled joy of the original. It is merely a crude comedy with lovable characters...made lovable by the first one.

Also, Carrey was great. Too bad he distanced himself from his best role in years.

It is a mess, but it entertained me and did not dissuade me from wanting to see more. I just wish it is in better hands next time out. Assuming this makes enough for there to be a next time.

I really think Stars & Stripes needed a bigger role. He gets taken out of the story way too quickly.

Because it's nowhere near as good as the first movie. Some people are ok with that, most are not. Aside from the fact it lacks the satiric tone/feel of the first, which makes the violence/vulgarity entertaining on a base level, Wadlow can't film action beats to save his life. It has some good stuff but those moments are fleeting.

EDIT: I rarely agree with him but Goldberg at Collider summed it up better than I did: http://collider.com/kick-ass-2-review/

I agree that it misses the joy and wonder of being a superhero that the first one had or the pathos, because as whacky as the characters were, their interpersonal relationships felt real. That goes for the villains as well. Instead, we got something closer to Superbad or the lesser Apatow comedies. Gross out humor and vulgar, viscous one-liners. But on that level I would say it succeeds.

The only reason that I am pulling this out, is I thought the reviewer turning this into a rant about Wadlow being sexist is a bit ridiculous. The only scene that I think he may have a point on is the Union J scene (truly bad product placement). But his big evidence? That scene is from Millar's graphic novel which DOES turn rape into a joke.

So, he may want to aim that self-righteousness at a far more depraved mind. Just a thought.

Definitely not as good as the first movie. I think the first one was great. Still thought this one was pretty damn good though…

Could've done without the cafeteria scene with the girls though. That was a particular gag that I found to be pretty childish. Sorry, poop and vomit jokes are lame.

I really enjoy how these movies in a way really show in "realistic" terms how dangerous it is to consider suiting up as a Superhero. It can get pretty real really damn fast.

When they
killed his dad
we all saw it coming but it in a way brought it back to what the real consequences could be to take on such a life with family getting involved and your personal life really getting ****ed up.

8/10 (I give KA1 a 9/10)

Hoping for a 3rd.

Also the resolution for the Todd character was horrible and awful, especially after what Todd did. I'm not Ok with how they did that.

That bugged me too. I really wish they had a different resolution to that. That was ridiculous.

Then again Marty and Dave had no clue what he had done either so...

Agreed. In my original post, I commented on how some of the jokes fell flat. This one definitely files under that category. I would have much preferred an awesome verbal smackdown from Mindy.

Also, another reason why the joke wasn't funny to me was because of the obvious CGI. Really, movie? Really?

I really think Stars & Stripes needed a bigger role. He gets taken out of the story way too quickly.

I understand how that needed to happen for the plot to move forward, but I completely agree. I missed him for the rest of the movie, to be honest. The character stole the show every moment he was on screen.

Same goes for [BLACKOUT]John Leguizamo's character, Javier. I really liked him, and I was really disappointed with him getting offed like that.[/BLACKOUT] :(

I still don't get people calling this movie joyless. Everyone at the showing I saw was laughing pretty loudly at almost all the jokes and from speaking to friends we all agreed that it was a fun, over the top movie. It's not like this film is TDKRises or something with a grim, cold atmosphere and lack of humour; it's vibrant, energetic and funny - just like the first one (albeit not quite as good).

The Todd sub-plot (if you can even call it a sub-plot) was a bit lame...he's 'redeemed' that easily?! but it wasn't too jarring, it was a quick 5 second part of a huge battle between many characters.

I agree on the 'sick stick' scene for the most part. When I read about it in reviews before seeing the film I thought 'that sounds god awful' but seeing it in the film I did find it amusing - a bit childish though.

I thought Mintz-Plasse was brilliant as The Motherf***er, once his first scene or two was out of the way (he's extremely bratty and the acting wasn't great). After that I thought he really got into the role and seemed to be enjoying himself, he really came into his own when the character becomes genuinely evil towards the final act.

Just can't believe this film is in the 20-30% range on RT. This is probably the last time I really put any stock in critics' opinions. I used to only see movies if they had over 60% but my favourite films this year have been films I've just taking a gamble on and gone in with an open mind. At the end of the day, they may be professional but it's still just a human being's opinion, subject to bias like everyone else. I think even the worst elements of this movie have been massively exaggerated by most critics, almost like they want to hate the film. I'd be interested to see what the reviews were like if they were all written without knowledge of what their peers had written about the film

LOVED the movie!

i actually enjoyed this one a lot more than the 1st film. Jim Carrey was excellent as Colonel Stars & Stripes. it's a shame Carrey distanced himself from this movie considering his reasons. but the funny thing is that Colonel Stars & Stripes was a born again Christian that was AGAINST guns!

anyway, the movie had a great mix of humor, action, and drama

hope there is a 3rd film

I'd be able to understand lukewarm reviews (especially since I think this movie pales in comparison to the first one), but this movie being in the 20-30 percentile range at RT is baffling to me.

I saw Elysium (currently with a fresh rating), and I felt it was pretentious and boring. I also saw Star Trek: Into Darkness earlier this year and felt the movie was decent, but sophomoric and irritatingly uninspired in the third act (when it's one of the highest rated movies of the Summer at RT). World War Z is a bland as heck movie, but still has a fresh rating, too. I enjoyed Kick-Ass 2 much more than any of these movies, even with its flaws.

People's tastes are subjective, and that's all well and good. This Summer has been more proof that I should continue to go to the movies I want to go to, and to not allow critics to persuade me one way or the other, though.

Got to agree on this. I used to be a lot more influenced by a film's reviews/RT score but I'm going to do what you said and just see whatever I think looks decent regardless of the consensus. I'm not saying the critics are 'wrong' as, like you said, it's all subjective but whatever angle most of them seem to be looking at this film from, I seem to be on the opposite side.
