Knightfall - Like or dislike?

Yeah, I like the art. It's Norm Breyfogle, Jim Aparo, and Graham Nolan doing the art. They're all great artists, IMO.

That the opinion of many batfans. This thread is actually the first time in my life I've seen somebody knock Knightfall's art lol.

I was never a big fan of Knightfall during Knightfall but honestly I don't mind it as much now. In retrospect it was a very good story a tad too long, but still very good. I hated Jean-Paul and I always will which is why it was such a good story.

It was a good story back then, I just hated having to collect the crossovers from titles I never liked like Catwoman and Robin and I remember how difficult it was to get those issues.

Thank god I waited and was able to get the infamous back breaking issue for 50 cents a while ago.

Batman 500 was actually the first batman comic I ever read - I was a Marvel kid. I opened the cover (awesome) and my jaw literally dropped it was so lame. I was nine years old and like "wow I need to stop reading comics" ha ha :whatever:

Batman 500 was the first issue that taught me comics come with variant covers when I was a kid. I picked up both the classic Batman costume cover and the new armoured Jean Paul Valley Batman cover as well, thinking they were two different comics. Then I opened them when I got them home.

Lesson learnt:woot:

ha ha. I remember yelling at my little brother when he ripped the postcards out, there were little cards of Bane and characters stapled to the spine. "It was in mint condition, it's ruuuuuuuiiined now!" ha ha. novelty comics

Yeah, whatever happened to free inserts with comics? I remember when the issues used to come polybagged with a free trading card. When Marvel Action Hour and the 90's Spider-Man animated series first came out there were free "animation cells" polybagged with certain issues. It's the reason I bought my first and only copy of Forceworks.

And that was the beginning... I hate variants...

I don't much collect comic books these days, I usually just pick up the TPB's when they come out, because I don't live close enough to a comic book store to make regular trips, but when I did I just used to avoid the variant covers like a plague. If they were rare (Dynamic Forces exclusive or something) I didn't bother trying to get my hands on them at all and if there were two different versions in the store, I usually just picked the one I liked best. I'm sure they've caused headaches for other collectors though.

It wasn't bad a first. One variant was okay. I remember collecting several post-Knightfall Batman issues with Kelley Jones covers and I recall at least 5 seperate variants.

:|

It's the last time I collected variants.

is there anything that takes place before knightfall? like how did the riddler get all the muscles and stuff? i always wondered if you had to read something before knightfall

There were a few issues of Batman starring Bane that took place before the Knightfall saga. Basically issue one of "official Knightfall" was the one where Bane broke out all the Arkham inmates with a bazooka. Before that though there was the issue where they pumped Riddler full of venom and Bane broke Killer Croc's arms. These were kind of build up issues, Bane watching from the shadows to see how Batman dealt with the different villains before putting his plan into action. I think it's also helpful if you've read the first Azrael arc as it gives you more of an idea of the character of Jean Paul Valley and why he went off the rails as Batman.

There was an arc in Legends of the Dark Knight befor Knightfall that introduced the concept of Venom, aptly named "Venom" where Batman becomes addicted to it (GREAT story, by the way).

Don't know where the hell you got the Riddler from that, though.

There was a comic book where Riddler fought Batman and Banes henchmen pumped him full of venom as well. It was just before Knightfall started.

I think Knightfall has aged well. I wasn't a big fan in the beginning but it grew on you. Speaking of Knightfall, has anyone seen the Nov DC solicits? The cover to Superman Batman #54 has Batman with Bane raised over his head and Superman looking on in shock. I think the story revolves around Batman somehow gaining Superman's powers. That cover is probably a dream sequence but it's still a cool image.

Yeah I noticed that, looking forward to seeing Bane pop up in Batman And Superman, the story itself sounds pretty impressive.

Wasn't Knightfall the first epic crossover for the Bat titles? It could have been tighter in some places, and the art could have been more consistent, and Batman should have put a better fight, but the whole Knight saga played almost like a fun serial TV show. I loved it. At twelve I always knew Bruce would be back, and the major gripe back then was Bruce's demise.

I enjoyed the issues leading into Knightfall more than the event itself....Venom, Sword of Azrael and Vengeance of Bane were much better than the Knightfall event itself.....

I did enjoy Knightfall part 3 which has one of my favorite all time covers and features batmans confrontation with Szasz......it manages to show the desperation and deterioration of batman in a single issue which is something the rest of the story struggled mightily to show.

Batman 500 is great though as was Knightsend

i've just recently re-read knightfall and i've gotta say its one of my favourite bat stories. i think it could make a really interesting film adaptation, obviously not with all the bat-villains turning up but zsasz, scarecrow and joker could. and if people want the full knightfall arc and can't find it in any shops i suggest going on the pirate bay, its got loads n loads n loads of comics on there.
