Occasionally, when I hit the power button on my HP Pavilion dv3000 laptop, the keyboard lights (volume controls, wi-fi control button) come on, but the screen remains black...I mean completely black, no backlight or anything. The computer stays "frozen" in this mode and doesn't boot at all. The keyboard lights stay on, but that's it. If I hit the power button again, it shuts the computer off. After holding the power button for a few seconds, then trying to restart the computer, it boots normally. Any ideas? Think this would be solved by a clean install of the OS? I'm running Vista Home Premium. I still have a two-year manufacturers warranty on the computer, should it be something in the hardware.

your saying it boots normally after you hold the power button? then it could mean you hit hibernate instead of shutting down your computer or could be something else but as long as it doesnt keep happening your ok.

That's a possibility. Like I said, it's not an every-boot thing. Just once in a while. And I get no error messages or anything. I'll keep an eye on that. Thanks!

I was going to say a MB issue. We get that at times on our Dell's here at work.

Crap. I was hoping it wasn't the MB...I didn't want to have to deal with all that hassle. I've shutdown and booted-up my laptop several times since first posting this thread and haven't run into it again. I'm going to see how long it takes for it to happen again. I think IF/WHEN it does happen, I'll call up HP or whoever deals with tech stuff under the warranty and see what they say.

UPDATE: Called HP, they ran me through some stuff, and it doesn't seem to help. Igoing to give them a call back tomorrow. I noticed something new though. I started up the computer, and it didn't boot. So I decided this time I would just let it go and see what happened. Well, to my surprise, after a minute, the computer BOOTED UP. So now I'm thinking it's some sort of delayed boot. And I'm wondering if this is normal or a MB issue?

J. J,

Weird. Have you done a scandisk? Could start to have bad sectors, and notebooks are awful with that respect. Also, important system file might have be changed out, and causing a slower load time than it should be. Finally, one more question, when you mean boot up..into Windows or the BIOS start up? This is a big big clue, but here is a few idea's on hardware, and Windows side until other wise ya let us know. =D

I'm assuming you know how to do a scan disk, so I give ya the next one.

1) Go to Start Menu
2) Look for "CMD" in Accessories
3) Run as "Admin"
4) When it loads, type in "sfc /scannow"

Let it run.

Let us know if that fix's the issue, or not.

Alistair,

I mean start up into Windows. But when it doesn't boot...it doesn't boot into ANYTHING. Like I said, I get a couple of lights and black screen. I ran a hard disk test and removed the battery and held the power button for 30 seconds to "drain the static." The laptop still did the "non-boot" or "delayed boot" or whatever you'd like to call it. I'm gonna call HP in the morning and see what happens.
