Who will she be? A senator? Friend of Luke? Rey's mom? Jedi apprentice of Luke? Resistance ally? First Order? Bounty Hunter? X Wing pilot #5?

Now her character has her own brand new shiny thread to discuss things in.

Making Star Wars has some potential info on her character:

from the rumors we’ve heard. She is very aristocratic and fancy in a way we haven’t really seen in Star Wars before. Her look is unique. Someone compared her design to The Hunger Games-meets-Star Wars. Dern wears a “fancy” dress and her hair is like something out of the prequels. The biggest defining detail of this new character played by Laura Dern is that she has pink hair in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Sources are at a loss for words when they tried to describe her hair which is very ornate, almost like something out of the Outlander Club in Attack of the Clones.
Also Laura Dern talks(not) about her role in Star Wars and about Carrie Fisher inspiration

Thanks for the info Moondragon. Sounds interesting. Can't wait to see this ornate hair. The description makes me think of Effie from Hunger Games.

Nothing as far as story or character, as usual they are not allowed to say anything.
If you want see a bit of her first reaction about being a part of the whole thing, she is delightfully enthusiastic (and looks great!) .
LOL at Zach's reaction and taking over her hand gestures.

She does seem enthusiastic. Thanks for keeping this thread alive.

Not much- Rian Johnson talking about working with Dern ...then just playfully throws something out there :yd1:

Rian Johnson says, "[Working with Dern on the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi] was like two indie kids getting away with something. We kept catching eyes, like, 'Are they really letting us do this?'"

"When you're around her," Johnson continues, "it's like sunlight. I'm sure you're getting a lot of people who've worked with her struggling to put it into words. I'm trying to describe it without being too cheesy. She's a force." He laughs, like he can't believe he's actually saying it. "She definitely has the Force."
Hope no one is taking that to seriously. ;)

Love the sound of that description. Can't wait to see how she looks done up like that.

Her character has to be a Resistance fighter then if not then she definitely has to be a Jedi

The Spokesman-Review - A Star Wars role? You’ll have to force it out of Laura Dern

NEW YORK – May the 4th be with you, Laura Dern, and darn all the mystery surrounding the character you’ll play as one of the latest additions to the Star Wars galaxy.

The actress, in town Thursday to support a family health-focused global initiative, was tight-lipped about her role in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which opens in December.

“What I can say is I had the time of my life,” Dern told The Associated Press. “I felt like an 8-year-old every day at work, to go to work and be in makeup and hair and walk out in this community of people and, you know, be in a studio where you look down the corridor and you see Chewbacca!”

The mind, Dern said, “melts and you feel like you’re at play.”

CBS News - Laura Dern talks health care and "The Last Jedi"

You're playing an admiral in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," but your character has been described as very feminine. How do you enjoy playing another strong female character who still values her femininity?

I haven't read that description, actually, so I can't comment on who I'm playing. I don't know if that's the correct description, but what I can say that I love about "The Last Jedi" is that it empowers female characters -- girls and women -- and minorities and an iconic female character like Carrie Fisher gave us. Part of the legacy of "Star Wars" is that women are not just part of the story, they make the story and the mythology of the story. That's always been there thanks to George Lucas and this invention. Being part of that is really exciting and how they are flipping the script in terms of diversity in various roles. I feel super proud to be part of it.

And it's May the 4th, too.

Yeah, May the 4th be with you!

Love her look, and thanks for the thread Title update

Vice Admiral Holdo: What did you say your name was, again?

Rey: Rey.

Holdo: **** you, Rey.

Good to see how she'll look. Wonder how big her role will be.

Underwhelmed on the character for the most part, but also had one of the best moments in the movie

Didn't enjoy the mutiny plot, at all. But her sacrifice at the end was a really amazing scene

They should've introduced her at the very beginning of the film and given her and Leia more scenes.

Apparently she was introduced in a novel. How did people who have read that feel about her?

My take, just from the movie, is she was ultimately a quality character and I enjoyed her scenes. It took a little while to warm up, though.

And there's that one scene with her that's amazing.

Dern was fine, and I liked Holdo's sacrifice, but boy, what a terrible, terrible leader.

Exactly. Why on earth didn't she
tell Poe her plan was to get the ships to the planet from the beginning?

But why should an Admiral have to go around having to explain all of her orders to a junior officer? Some officers just expect the people under them to respect the chain of command and follow the orders given to them.

Because
1) the Resistance was literally on its last legs. why not have everyone clear on the objective? 2) Poe isn't just a nobody, he's a friend of Leia's (who trained Holdo) and destroyed Starkiller Base just days before 3) it would have taken 20 seconds.

Plus--

Good leaders-- whether Admirals in Star Wars or a manager at a local fast food chain-- are supposed to get the best out of their teams and guide them to accomplishing goals.

In the movie, it's a dire situation. The Republic is destroyed (ugh), as is much of their fleet and fighters, their leaders on their own ship is either dead (Ackbar) or close to (Leia). And they've got a fleet of enemy ships bearing down on them as they run out of fuel. It's only natural that the crew would be scared and looking for a plan.

Holdo should have been inspiring them. She should have been transparent, she should have assured them they have a plan and told them what it was, then kept them focused on working together to complete that goal. She should have instilled in them the spark of hope the movie keeps talking about.

But she didn't. Either out of stubbornness, or ego, or a misguided/mistimed lesson.

I get the drama of it, and I get the mentor/student theme the movie had all around, and Poe learning that being a hero isn't always flashy etc. I like those things-- But it didn't work on a logical, practical level, and that undercuts it all.
