DreamWorks has optioned the rights to Platinum Studios' comic book Atlantis Rising for a live-action feature adaptation to be produced by studio-based Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, says The Hollywood Reporter. Platinum chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg also will produce.

Created by Rosenberg, "Atlantis" is a five-part miniseries first published by Platinum Studios Comics in November. The fifth and final installment in the series, written by Scott O. Brown and drawn by Tim Irwin and Andy Elder, is due on comic book shelves in late April.

In "Atlantis," seismic disturbances at sea force world militaries to investigate the deepest part of the world's ocean, where an underground civilization emerges to wage war with planet Earth.

Sounds epic! Hopefully a director of some note is hired for this.

I'm surprised Orci and Kurtzman aren't writing this one. From what little heard, I like it.

I don't know who to root for. :csad:
Sounds like it could be cool.

Len Wiseman has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of the apocalyptic sci-fi comic book "Atlantis Rising" for DreamWorks Pictures, reports Variety.

Wiseman, who directed the first two "Underworld" films and Live Free or Die Hard, also recently signed on to helm another DreamWorks project: the thriller Motorcade.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing.

Created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, "Atlantis Rising" is a five-part miniseries published by Platinum Studios. The story kicks off when seismic disturbances at sea force world militaries to investigate the deepest part of the ocean, where an underground civilization emerges to engage in war with planet Earth.

Platinum Studios' Scott Mitchell Rosenberg is also producing. Randy Greenberg is executive producing.

Motorcade will likely move forward before Atlantis Rising.

Not big on Wiseman, but this sounds like it could be a great summer FX movie.

i don't think Wiseman is picking his projects like a wise man (pun intended). he keeps picking these movies that are over his head. he needs to settle down and do a couple of small flicks in order to hone his craft.

I thought he was doing Gears of War?

I disagree, these are the type of movies he is suited for, he's like Bay in that he's never gonna make little character movies. After LFODH he's shown he can take the reigns on a tent pole blockbuster, and in truth 'Motorcade' is smaller in scale, it was described to me as a script in the mould of 'In the Line of Fire'.

lol after Live Free or Die Hards success it seems he can pick and choose w/e he wants now...

They should just do a Namor movie instead of this....sounds about the same

Wow Len has too many movies on his plate. Please focus on gears of war 2. Maybe he left it??

Joby Harold Adapting Atlantis Rising
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
December 11, 2008

Writer/director Joby Harold is negotiating to write the adaptation of the comic book Atlantis Rising for DreamWorks Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter. Len Wiseman is attached to direct the apocalyptic science fiction project.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing along with Platinum Studios chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who created the original "Atlantis Rising" five-part series. Randy Greenberg is executive producing.

In "Atlantis," an underworld civilization is discovered after seismic rumbles announce its presence. Hostilities with Earth's land-dwellers ensue.

The newly independent DreamWorks hopes to have "Atlantis" -- envisioned as a big-budget, effects-driven sci-fi war movie in the vein of the James Cameron-directed Aliens and The Abyss -- in theaters as a summer 2011 tentpole.

Harold is currently adapting the Frank Miller comic Ronin for Warner Bros. Pictures.

congrats Marvel and whoever else involved with the long in trouble Namor film... This will come out now and there'll be pretty much no chance/no interest in seeing Namor... they lost the ball on this one

is this movie happening?

i want an Atlantis movie. the technology is there. studios have the money. ts time for some epic Atlantis .

I like the cover. It's gonna be War Of The Worlds except the Aliens come from beneath.

Dreamworks has the rights to make this movie. However Dreamworks split with Paramount back in 2008 and it was searching for new investors. Initially Spielberg had sealed a deal with INdia's Reliance group to produce movies. If i'm not mistaken the initial deal with reliance was worth $ 1.2 billion with Reliance investing $ 500 million immediatly and $ 700 million would be loaned from a bank ( think it was J.P Morgan). But given the whole crap that happened with the ecomic crisis , Spielberg and other prominent members of Dreamworks were advised to wait till economy had calmed a bit.
I think that a couple of months ago the deal was finally given the go ahead.

Dreamworks has aquired the rights to alot of interesting properties , Ghost IN The Shell being one of them. I think right now they're looking at what projects could be the most profitable ones.
It's a bit like what Marvel did when had gotten enough cash to form their own production company and to fully fund their own movies. Although they have the rights to characters like say Antman , they went ahead with Iron Man which became a huge hit for them.

i think Atlantis would stand out. everyone knows what it is but was there ever a movie? i think this would bring people in the theater.

Wow, really cool news! This, if you ask me, is something that truly is going to blow lots of people's minds.

Oh yeah. Definately .
However i think that directors who are also ( exec.) producers , tend to focus on eother directing a movie or producing one. Not both at the same time unless it's the same movie.
Right now Spielberg is making the next Tin Tin movie. And with reports that Indy 5 is in (active) development , it could be the news of Atlantis Rising going forward could come after 2011.

Not only that but it's also a question which project Wiseman would choose first. This or Gears Of War.

Also here's an interesting article posted on Nikki Finke's website , dated June 15th :

The Status Of Studio Development Coffers: Disney Running On Empty, Sony Filling Up

I've confirmed that Disney is telling its on-the-lot producers that the film studio is out of development money right now. So no new script purchases and no filling open writing assignments openings until September at the earliest. That's because Disney will be tapped out until the funds are replenished in October because of the way its fiscal year works. Things are so bad that the film studio's line was "...except for Bruckheimer" for a while -- but apparently even mighty Jerry is going to have to use his own funds if he wants to continue developing material. It's not like this wasn't expected, but this time around it's more severe, I hear. When profits at the film studio sank a whopping 97% last quarter, because Disney's slate bombed in the midst of Hollywood's box office boom, boss Bob Iger forced the film studio to what he called "address costs at virtually every level" which meant cutting back even further the film studio's pic output, production budgets and marketing costs.

The rest of the 2009 studio development business is in piss-poor shape. "It's crazy how ****** the spec market has been this year, especially given what a debacle 2007 and 2008 were," a source tells me. MGM is fighting to survive. Universal and Warner Bros will develop a little right now. Paramount desperately wants to make money so, if anything, it wants to speed up development. But there are still those leftover DreamWorks projects there. Fox is proceeding normally for this time of year. By contrast, sources at production companies with deals on the Sony lot -- yes, there are still a few -- claim SPE is flush. (Also, its fiscal year just begun.) "They'd actually like to buy more spec scripts but just haven't found much that's gotten them excited," a tipster tells me. "There's no problem in Culver City. Sony's giving certain producers the greenlight to fill open writing assignments."

Gears Of War was to be made by New Line and New Line is part of WB whereas Atlastis Rising is to be made by Dreamworks. Some movies will continue to be made with Paramount ( like the Transformers movies) so it could be that Paramount would push the project. But i doubt that since we haven't heard anything from Paramount
