Leonardo DiCaprio is gunning for an Oscar and he’ll play just about anybody — or rather, everybody — to get one, as the four-time acting nominee is set to star in New Regency’s multiple personality tale “The Crowded Room,” TheWrap has learned.

After nearly 20 years of circling the role of Billy Milligan, DiCaprio has committed to play the first person to successfully use multiple personality disorder as a defense in a court of law. Milligan was put on trial in the late 1970s after being accused of raping three women at Ohio State University, as well as committing robbery.

Milligan had 24 personalities including Adalana, a lesbian who took responsibility for the rapes; Ragen, a Yugoslavian communist who confessed to the robbery; and Arthur, an uptight Englishman.

Milligan’s lawyers argued that his alternate personalities committed the crimes without his knowledge, and he subsequently became the first person to be acquitted using the defense of a multiple personality disorder diagnosis. Milligan died last December, perhaps paving the way for Hollywood to finally tell his story.

DiCaprio’s Appian Way will produce “The Crowded Room” with New Regency, which is currently producing DiCaprio’s next movie “The Revenant.” DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson will produce with Alexandra Milchan.

Screenwriter Jason Smilovic will adapt Daniel Keyes’ nonfiction book about Milligan for New Regency, which has been developing the project for several years.

Now that sounds like a story worthy of a film.

Damn that's just a wacka doodle film that might get him an Oscar if The Revenant doesn't.

I highly recommend the book. :wow:

Ugh, I hate how they talk about his oscar thirst. It seems like folks online are more obsessed with this than he is. Leo never campaigns. Go look at Redmayne, now that is a campaign.

I honestly think that all that is the male equivalent of people constantly dogging Jennifer Aniston about her break-up with Brad Pitt (a full decade ago now, btw) and how she's not married yet. "Oh look, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie look so happy together. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT, JEN?! STILL NOT MARRIED????"

This sounds right up Aronofsky's alley.

Or Fincher. Didn't he say that he always asks scripts about serial killers/psychotics to be sent his way? :funny:

I think you're thinking of a different killer film? Aronofsky is attached to the nurse serial killer (Charles Cullen) one. :p

He was attached to this book as well, he does that a lot. He tried to write a script for a book adaptation for 'Flickster'...that book is great, but doesn't scream movie to me.

Also, Cameron was also once attached. I think he was the first to try and make this.

Aronofsky is good, so is Finch. So would Cronenberg. To put in some less famous names, I think Mike Cahill would be a good choice too.

This sounds like it could walk the tight rope of ridiculous and awesome.

As for DiCaprio's "Oscar hunting" I honestly don't thin he cares about the Oscar. Instead, DiCaprio essentially collects directors. He's spoken about this a number of times over the years. Particularly when he was starting out, he had a list of directors he wanted to work with, #1 being Scorsese and he has used his bankability to make that happen. Often he is the factor that has allowed certain filmmakers to get certain projects made at all (Scorsese described this as one the reasons they have worked together so much). Being the most bankable star in films from multiple top of the line directors just happens. to a lot of Oscary lead roles.

Seeing Leo with this mustache/hair combo will be great haha.

The first thing I thought of, when I read Leo was reviving this...

Back in the early 90's right after T2, this and Spider-Man were going to be Cameron's follow-ups but both fell apart because of issue's with the rights.

His screenplay for this is still flotaing online...

It has to be Fincher, Aronofsky, or Nolan. Those are the three for the job.

Or hell, another Scorsese collaboration.
