New Regency is acquiring screen rights to "Beat the Reaper," eyed as a star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio, reports Variety.

The protagonist in the novel written by Josh Bazell is a Manhattan emergency room doctor, whose life becomes complicated when a mobster recognizes the doc from his former life as a hitman who went into the witness protection program.

Julie Yorn will produce with DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. The film will be a co-production between Appian Way and the new production/management venture recently launched by Rick Yorn.

Sounds like a cool project.

I like Leo, and I never would have thought that earlier in his career, as I use to not be able stand the guy's acting. But he has turned into a fine actor.

My only bug about him is that he seems so desperate for an Oscar. I mean when is the last time he came out with a movie that wasn't during the Oscar season? It's like he's always trying to go for that statue.

Sounds a little bit like A History of Violence. I'm curious who will direct.

And also, the title kinda sounds like a euphemistic expression for *********ion....

.....but that could just be me.

It DOES sound a lot like A History of Violence. Hopefully it will be better though. I never understood what was so great about that movie. And I like Viggo and Kronenberg. But their talents were put to much better use in Eastern Promises.

Sounds good. Should be a great role for Leo.

It does sound like History of Violence, but that's a good thing.

Writers set for 'Reaper'
New Regency sets scribes to adapt novel

New Regency has set Brian Koppelman and David Levien to adapt the Josh Bazell novel "Beat the Reaper."

The drama, being developed as a potential star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio, revolves around a Manhattan ER doctor whose life becomes complicated when a mobster recognizes him from his former life as a hitman (Daily Variety, Jan. 9).
More than one option

Julie Yorn is producing with DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran in a co-production of Appian Way and Rick Yorn's production-management company. Aaron Criswell will also be a producer.

Koppelman and Levien scripted Steven Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience," which will premiere Tuesday at Tribeca.

The scribes also worked with Soderbergh on "Ocean's Thirteen." The duo most recently completed directing "Solitary Man" for Millennium Films.

Kate Winslet's been doing the same thing the last decade. Now that she has one, she'll probably relax a little bit in terms of movie roles.
