In various stages of development for close to a decade, the dramatic thriller A Willing Patriot appears more likely than ever to finally make it to the big screen as The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List, Taken) is in final talks to play the lead.

Originally set up at Warner Bros. Pictures, A Willing Patriot is scripted by Jason Keller and revolves around an American federal agent who goes undercover in South America’s dangerous so-called tri-border area — where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet — in an attempt to dismantle a terrorist-funding network.

Land of Mine director Martin Zandvliet is attached to direct the film, which will be fully financed by Marc Butan’s MadRiver Pictures. Butan will produced alongside Keller, Guymon Casady and Darin Friedman of Film 360 and Gianni Nunnari of Hollywood Gang. Shannon Gaulding will oversee through the latter as well.

I wonder if this is the one Kathryn Bigelow was attached to for a while.

Liam Neeson's 'A Willing Patriot' Nabbed by Open Road for U.S. http://thr.cm/FxAIc9

Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the Liam Neeson starrer A Willing Patriot.

The film, which was presented to buyers this month at the Cannes Film Festival, reunites Open Road with Neeson, who starred in Open Road's The Grey.
Marc Butan's MadRiver Pictures is financing and producing the international thriller, which centers on a CIA agent (Neeson) who engages in an elaborate cat-and-mouse game with a sinister terrorist who's planning an imminent attack.


The film will shoot on location in South Africa, Morocco and Tunisia, with Open Road Films planning a wide release in 2016.
