I was thinking how hard it is to invent classic comic book characters.

So what are some recently created characters who are now regarded as classic or iconic?

The two that jump in my mind immediately are Gambit and Deadpool. Any others?

X-23 has gained decent traction as a character, though her legacy status may disqualify her
I'd say Fantomex had potential if Remender kept writing UXF, he was making him a great, complex character
others that could have potential if a good writer takes them on: Amadeus Cho, Quentin Quire, Daisy Johnson, Valeria Richards.. and plenty of others I suppose

don't know, seems like it's much easier to create new villains than new heroes

Oh, and the most classic new-ish character of all... Maggot!
lol

As for DC, I haven't a damn clue
I'd say Rick Grimes and many other indie characters may qualify at this point

Iconic as how? Superman level iconic or just know more by the mainstream public than the usual characters?

When I say classic or iconic, I mean the character is cool or interesting enough to have a sizable fanbase or is instantly recognizable by casual geeks.

Like the Flash or Nightcrawler.

Hellboy who was created in 1993 got reasonably popular. I think he is Dark Horse flagship character.

I'd say out of all them the biggest name is Spawn. He had his own movie, a great HBO cartoon and a massively successful action figure line that caused a chain reaction of success for the company.

There really is a lack of interesting recent characters.
Blue Marvel is alright but lacks compelling rogues.
I like Sentry.
Sleepwalker was cool in the 90s, not much out of him since.
Darkhawk had his moments.
Eric O'Grady is the best Ant-Man.
Alpha... Alpha is awful.

Blue Marvel really deserves better. Put him in his own title, fighting cosmic level threats and I think he would catch on very fast. Mighty Avengers is great, but their street-level focus really holds him back.

I'm thinking Bishop, he was pretty popular for awhile.

deadpool and harley quinn have to be the biggest. After TDKR Bane is a lot more popular too

I won't bring names already mentioned.

Kyle Rayner and Impulse come to mind. Bart Allen had his own series.

To me, iconic has to do with how recognized a character is to the general public. I'd say those three are the biggest.

Yeah and Deadpool is definitely the single biggest one

I'm always amazed when random people who aren't into comics or their related properties somehow know who Deadpool is.. I've met a number of such people

I guess I should've said "popular".

Yeah, that would change things. You can rattle off about 50 names easy.

To me, iconic means widespread recognition. Like I said before, Spawn fits the bill. I think that everyone, fan or not, knows who Spawn is. Maybe Bane but only because of the movie.

Cable if we count his original incarnation before he was retconned into Nathan Summers

In his defense the build up for the story was pretty big and it wasn't revealed into an odd number issue of Cable's solo series (issue#19 or something weird like that).

I thought they were going to "officially" reveal it at the end of X-Cutioners Song but like everything else, Marvel must have felt the need to drag it out longer.

Actually the revelation happened earlier than that in the Fathers and Sons arc which ran in Cable 6-8. I guess I take it for granted that most people know that Cable is Scott's son as Marvel has used it quite a bit in the last 2 decades, especially recent years following all that build up around the mutant messiah and AvX
