About recasting original cinematic made characters.

To be clear this unenforceable rule would mean:

No Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson or James Coburn and the rest in Magnificent Seven, one of the greatest westerns of all time?

No Deniro in Cape Fear.

Can't have Scorsese's The Departed with Jack, Leo and Damon.

Dollars Trilogy? Sorry Clint. Can't be in a new version of Yojimbo.

Anyone like Denzel in Man On Fire? Sorry. It never would have gotten made.

Sorry Jeff. There can be only one The Fly.

Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in the Birdcage? Can't get made.

Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr won't be referenced in Sleepless In Seattle because An Affair To Remember, one of the great romance films of Hollywood was a remake. Also Grant should have thrown out the script for His Girl Friday since it's a remake.

Can't have Jimmy Stewart in The Man Who Knew To Much. Hitchcock was remaking his own stuff with that one.

Don't answer the call for Scarface, Pacino.

The laughs in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels? Invalid.

Grew up with Angels In The Outfield? Sorry bout that. The one you knew doesn't exist anymore.

But your reasoning should be the same for those characters as cinematic characters.

Lol, his reasoning?
What about the reverse? Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which is a character that originated in movies therefore absolutely "pure and untouchable" by his reasoning. Yet the very popular one was the made for TV recast.
She couldn't exist with his rule.
I'd love to see him rationalize why that's ok, just cause it's the other way around.

And I missed it why was Young Indian Jones and younger Obi-Wan ok? But not a younger Solo? ....Reasons?
And why draw the line, then say Hardy as Mad Max is fine? ...Reasons?

Even the Back to the Future franchise movie cast he praises as absolutely "pure and untouchable" was full of recasts for the sequels Crispin Glover George McFly was recast as well as Marty's girlfriend Jennifer Parker.
They couldn't have made the sequels he loves, if they followed his outrageous if it was a character made for film, then absolutely no recast rule.:funny:

Some creators of the character don't even like the interpretation the actor put on screen, even if it's popular.
Just cause you liked that one actors interpretation, are they (lapsed license permitting), not allowed to have someone reimagine the character, closer to the way they envisioned it? No, cause ...Reasons?

Some people are actually defending recasting iconic film characters with different actors. ... They actually think that all film characters are fair game for a new actor portraying them.

He also changes his tune from this^, to just a few specific 80s characters he grew up with he doesn't ever want recast, which is fine to desire, it's the version you like, I grew up with those too, everyone gets that. Not everything needs to be remade.
However does that make them "pure and unteachable" for others? No, they are not.
Like everyone indicates, whether they were created first; on paper in a novel, in a comic, or screen-play script, etc. and then become a movie, the line he's drawn is arbitrary and meaningless. They are all characters interpreted by an actor, they can always be reinterpreted or expended on, it's fair game.
If it's a great character, there may be impetus to explore it further.

If you don't like the new take, don't see it.:cwink:

Anyway, he's now changed his tune, to just a few specific characters he doesn't want recast.

Didn't even think about that. So no MASH then either. No Alice, In The Heat Of The Night, La Femme Nikita, no Connor Macleod Highlander, no Friday Night Lights no Fargo...

This thread is about the beloved 80s original cinematic icons like Indiana Jones, Freddy Krueger, Marty Mcfly, adult Han Solo and Peter Venkman and how these characters should be off limits to let them rest in peace on film and have their legacy continue in video games, books, comics and merchandise then to bring them back from the dead on film and stain their legacy to make them into jokes.
