A BRITISH radio DJ has been blasted for playing the Van Halen hit Jump while police were trying to talk down a suicidal woman on a highway overpass.

Morning show host Steve Penk got a request for the 1984 classic from a joker stuck in the traffic jam when four lanes of the road had to be closed.

He said he put it on to empathise with drivers, but moments later the woman plunged almost 10 metres.

The 30-year-old suffered only minor injuries.

Mental health experts criticised Penk’s song choice on 96.2FM The Revolution as being in poor taste.

Emotional support hotline the Samaritans said, "It shows a lack of compassion and understanding."

Listener Lorna Guinn, 42, was unamused by Penk’s antics.

"It's irresponsible given this woman could have overheard it on someone's car stereo. I found it pathetic and nasty,” Ms Guinn said.

Penk, who hosts a show called TV's Naughtiest Blunders and owns the radio station broadcasting in northwest England, said, "The entire area had been thrown into total chaos by a single, troubled woman.

"I was, of course, very sorry to hear that the lady had subsequently jumped from the bridge but relieved that her injuries were minor.

"If, as has been suggested, the woman jumped because she heard the song from a passing car radio that's unfortunate.

"But I don't regret playing it for a minute."

I don't even see how this is even a problem? It's not like the woman was listening to the radio or anything. :whatever:

Hey guys. Let's ban the song so that no one will ever be under its evil influence again.

Hey, at least it got the traffic moving again. :hehe:

I got the first sentence in and cracked up.

double the post double the fun.

lol stupid people with no sense of humor... thats the real problem that caused everything.

I mean, had he not admitted why he did it, he could have played it off as a strange coincidence. However, he said he did it intentionally, and that is pretty tasteless.

Hey man, this is the thread about a DJ. The Feedback thread is the sticky thread at the top of the Community.

Tasteless, funny, and awesome. Especially since no one got hurt.

Hahaha!

Someone did the same thing in San Francisco on the Golden Gate bridge in the early-mid 2000's.

she fell 10 meters?!...LMAO.. i would not jump from 10 meters!

This is brilliant. **** the haters.

Some people are so inconsiderate when they die. If someone dies during a movie, don't disturb the other patrons who are watching the movie. If someone wants to kill themselves, don't hold up traffic or take other people.

Looks like this DJ.....

should have looked before he leaped.

Now what if he had played Jumper by Third Eye Blind. Would these people be hailing him as a compassionate and caring person?

At worst, this was in poor taste. That's about it. It's not worth getting your panties in a bunch over (or "knickers in a twist," whatever).

That said, who jumps 10 meters?! That's about 32 feet. Are we trying to commit suicide, or just trying to give ourselves a leg injury? Wear your ovaries on the outside, woman, and jump from a skyscraper! Just make sure you land on the sidewalk/pavement instead of the road; don't want your corpse blocking traffic.

This reminds me of something I heard yesterday.

Prince William was in New Zealand and someone drove passed him playing 'Candle In The Wind' from his car radio. :woot:

hehe exactly!

I mean, if your gonna top yourself do it in private. Don't do it in a place where it will cause hassle for other people. And not only that, what if there was kids in those cars and they saw someone plunge to their death? Not very nice.
