I think Berlanti is fine for this, he can bring the teen angst and melodrama.
And is ok casting some outrageous over-the-top villains, who should steel the show from the kids.

The kids casting are likely unknowns and somewhat superfluous as is Captain Planet, this movie franchise lives or dies on the stardom, character casting and portrayal of the villains.
