Looking back now, the go-bots really did suck

Yep, I remember seeing those "Go-Bot" kits in K-Mart as well back in the '80s, realizing they were from Mospeada (AKA 3rd generation Robotech), and squealing like a little Japanese schoolgirl in a Sanrio store as I bought them.

However -- they were HARD to build. I was glad when Japanese toys of both the Alpha fighter jet and Mospeada Ride Armor were released in the US shortly thereafter.

BTW, if you enjoy this type of robot nerd-speak I'm now indulging in, come visit my "History of Transforming Robots" thread at the link below!

As a fellow child of the 90s, I can honestly say that the shows you listed sucked, besides Beast Wars. You want good 90s cartoons, look no further than anything that was on Nickelodeon, X-Men, or Batman: The Animated Series.
Hey swat cats, and Street sharks were cool. Besides I listed those because they were weakest of the good 90s shows. He listed his faves and if I listed the others shows you put here which are awesome then this battle wouldv'e been one with ease. It's like his 80s shows were a rock, and those 90s shows were the death star. Very unfair to list them.

And why won't anyone talk about the rocklords.:cmad:

Thundercats had the best opening for a cartoon ever. Geez if only every show had that level of animation.

The ending credits weren't that bad either. Cartoons of our youth had the greatest themesongs.

Even though the lyrics were always silly I do miss that cartoons from the late 90's up decided to drop the lyric themes. Power rangers and Tmnt seem to be some of the few that keep on rocking with lyrics.

I used to watcht that show to see the giant combiner version of them. That wasn't a dream was it?

LOL. Yeah Go-Bots sucked. I liked it though. They had some pretty cool characters. I forget the evil females name. SHe was my favorite because she transformed into a race car and in robot form would stomp on the ground creating some sort of lightning strike.:o

QFT. To this day while watching the DVDs I let the opening play because it's that awesome. I can't think of any other cartoon I own that I do that for.

Although TC is probably one of the worst examples on how to f' up a cartoon series. It started out w/ some top-notch art and by shows end I remember thinking that I could out draw the artist and I was like 9-10yrs old.:csad:

I guess what's even worse than Gobots were the generic knock offs you'd see in most thrift stores.

Funny how the Gobots had an evil female robot who was the coolest character in the show, but the Transformers (Well, American continuity I guess.) never featured any female Decepticons whatsoever. I guess Decepticon females wouldn't put up with Megatron's "I am your leader!!!" crap and decided to just bail on them.

P.S. Did you know that in the French dubbed version of the G1 cartoon Starscream was a femme bot? They hired a female voice actress to read all the lines.

Haha that's priceless. Starscream's voice was annoying in English but man that would have really changed my childhood if it was female.

I don't know... Maybe i'm stuck in my ways but TG1 is my definite version. The one they show now looks too girly, the animation looks like it belongs along side Hannah Montana. :(
Don't get me wrong, if I actually liked the animation, I'd be making shrines to this cartoon and sacrificing animals in it's honor, but the animation sucks, so it ends up behind Beast Wars/Beast Machines for me personally. The characters and story are what keeps me watching.

G1 is usually people's definite version because it's the only/one of the few they've been exposed to. Go back and watch the show now, I mean really watch it. It blew chunks. Sure, you had a fairly good first three episodes, and a handful of well written season 3 episodes, but everything else...crap. The show had zero continuity. It had episodes where they went to singing planets (Carnage in C-Minor), fought craptastic villains, and were filled with plot devices galore. The difference was Transformers actually had a novel enough concept to remain popular in the face of it's show and comics cancelation.

I know curiosity is biting you and you want to hear what the French Starscream sounds like.

It wasn't that bad a cartoon you know. The storytelling was alot better than stuff like Turbo Teen or Hulk Hogan's Rock 'N Wrestling. If you want crappy 80's cartoons, look no further than those. Plus you have to remember just what age group the G1 show was aimed at. It wasn't really for people our age at all. That was pretty sophisticated stuff for cartoons geared towards kids in elementary school back then.

I mean, it's not Turbo Teen bad, but compare it to a contempory like Robotech, and Transformers was pretty poor. It was anything but sophisticated. It was a 22 minute toy commercial and a thinly vieled one at that. I seriously don't see any sophistication in there. I do applaud the grim and dark tone of some of the season 3 episodes and Transformers The Movie. Seriously though, I defy anyone with a working brain to watch that show for more than 2 minutes without rolling their eyes at least once.

As I said, just go to Allspark.com or TFW2005.com (a certain Mods stomping ground) and start a thread titled "G1 is the best Transformers show" and see how many hours it takes for it to get locked. The fanbase basically loathes that show.

SB deserves death by a good stomping from My Little Pony.
It's nostalgia filled thoughts like this that make me groan. I remember when Bay did the first movie the local paper ran an article about how the "Transformers were making a comeback". Making a comeback:huh:, they'd been steadily airing a cartoon for twenty years at that point, had a new toyline every year and were rapidily expanding at that point. Ridiculous.

I hate to remind you of this, again, but the only toyline, show and comic to be cancelled was Transformers G1. Why was it cancalled; because it became unpopular. Since Beast Wars, this hasn't occurred.

Transformers died for me when Rodimus Prime was a manic depressive and couldn't cope with being a leader.. and week after week *****ed about not being good enough.

Quit raining on the parade SB... your debbie down-ness is giving me diarrhea.

It was plus and minus for me. That season was jam packed with some awesome episodes, like Burden Hardest to Bear, Ultimate Weapon, Call of the Primitives, Theif in the Night, the Return of Optimus Prime, Money is Everything and Dark Awakening. Though Judd Nelson and Dick Guttier are no replacement for Peter Cullen's Optimus.

Here is a taste though.

I liked the comic books better than the tv show. Even though SB talks about it being canceled, when the first issue of the Transformers comic came out in 1984, it said "#1 of a four-issue limited series". When the last issue came out in 1991, it said "#80 of a four-issue limited series".

It sold well enough to continue, I do have all of them, but there have been plenty of limited series to continue into ongoings. Hell, just look at Marvel now.

I liked the comics better too. Though Bob Budinsky stayed past his welcome and there never was an Optimus/Megatron rivalry, though the Ratchet/Megatron rivalry was interesting.

well.. those 4 clips took my memories of the transformers down a few steps. Not sure if the singing aliens did or the fact that the transformers were now some alien toys.

The spanish episode is funny.. Cono B.O.T. Grande Puta.
