Looking back now, the go-bots really did suck

well.. those 4 clips took my memories of the transformers down a few steps. Not sure if the singing aliens did or the fact that the transformers were now some alien toys.

The spanish episode is funny.. Cono B.O.T. Grande Puta.
B.O.T is horrifyingly bad. The worst part is the when the two boys gag and drag the girl off at the end....worst or best, I can't decide.

SB... destroyer of nostalgia.
I think the thing is most people remember the pilot, which was pretty good, then the movie, which rocked balls even though it had no plot, then stopped watching right when the show attempted to have an ongoing plot (because of Rodimus) forgetting there was all these horrible episodes inbetween.

P.S. Watch those season 3 episodes I posted, they really are pretty good.

To be fair, the writers said they made that episode as a self-parody.

i suppose... looking back on it as an adult... the parody doesn't work. :(

I think I watched a handful of the GI Joe cartoons. The comic was far superior.

Trust me, that's far from the worst. B.O.T is the worst episode ever, considering there is an Autobot sized High School, the Combaticons somehow drive down a city street and Bruticus is taken out like a punk. I don't even get the plot really. The show's inconsistency is the worst though, for example the Constructicons built Megatron (Five Faces of Darkness) and then switched alliances from the Autobots (The Secret of Omega Supreme) and then Megatron built them on Earth (Heavy Metal War)....yeah, okay:huh:. Or how Grimlock went from arrogant and semi-intelligent to eating-paste stupid. Better still, Blaster and the Season 2 Autobots were on the Ark...nevermind, just roll with it.

Well, duh, they were actually aloud to shoot each other in the comics.

List of shows from the Eighties you thought were cool, but no, they actually sucked.
  1. He-Man
  2. Transformers
  3. G.I.Joe
  4. Voltron
  5. Silverhawks

Sucked for who? You as an adult? Of course. If a child were to watch those shows though... they would not "suck".

You've grown out of those shows... but for people who grew up with them and love the nostalgia... they are great shows in memory. You feeling the need to remind people how much they "sucked" is a reality that I'm not asking you to bring me back to. So how 'bout you grow down a little... you old nutsack.

I was watching some G.I. Joe on youtube.. and some of it still holds up today I guess. The animation, action and overall continuity (outside of the GI Joe movie with the spores).

The toys are what still impress me. The level of vehicles, action figures, and crap they sold. Probably my top 3 toys of all time outside of video games.

I'm sorry, but it's a weak argument even still. Shows today, or at least those in the early ninties were way more sophisticated. Rugrats and Rocko's Modern Life for example had actual plots, characters and wit that could be appretiated beyond the show's target audience. Those eighties shows were shows about toys, not shows with toys attached, but shows that spun out of toylines as a means of advertising them. You don't get anymore suck than that. Those shows are only good to most people today because the toys were good. Most posters on here couldn't name a single Transformers plotline, outside of the movie, and this is a nerd site. They do however, remember the toys. That's because no one ever paid attention to the show, it was just a showcase for the new line of toys that would come out that week. I even remember as a kid being less concerned about what happened to the characters and more concerned over whether I had them or not.

Steamboat Willie was waaay sophisticated for it's time... but compared to some cartoons that came after it... sucks.

Most things improve over time.

What's your point?

Or that Larry Hama is just that damn good of a writer, where he gets assigned the comic book of a toy sticks with it for 12 years and made it quality

But Transformers, G.I.Joe and He-Man weren't sophisticated for the time, in fact they were a giant, massive, commercially charged leap backwards. Looney Toons was an amazing blend of humor and cultural relevance. Transformers spent ten minutes of a twenty two minute episode introducing characters in exposition and talking about their toy gimmicks (Dinobot Island). I'm sorry, but cartoons were really trite and foolish back then, and it's an incredibly black period for animation...a time when toy coporations realized they could buy television time on Saturday mornings to advertise to kids. Claiming this was some step forward in animation is like claiming Vince Shamwow and Tony Little are television visionaries. The shows were written by committee and would frequently recycle plots between shows (for example G.I.Joe would frequently lift plotlines from Transformer and vice versa). The characters were one dimensional, the plots were thin at best and the dialogue was cheesey as hell. After Warner Bro's treated us to decades of Bugs Bunny and Disney had been producing quality children's movies this is supposedly an example of "improving over time". Ridiculous.

I love how he got into the conversation. :wow:

The only 80s cartoons that I think still hold up are DangerMouse and Macross.

I'm glad you said Macross, because the original redub has some issues. As time goes by I've learned to appreciate the original script a little more than Macek's rewrite.

Thundercats was worse than Transformers or G.I. Joe. The title sequence was the only really good part.

And Voltron wasn't nearly as stupid in its original uncut Japanese form (well, it was more dramatic and violent, anyway).

Battle Of The Planets was cool but that was in the 70's.

I loved the 80's revival as G-Force.

The truth is, he's not that much different. Many might find it troubling to know the reason Optimus Prime died in TFTM, along with Prowl, Ironhide, Shockwave, and the rest of the G1 cars and planes is because those items were no longer going to be offered in stores. The original ideas for the movie never featured Optimus dying, but rather destroying Unicron at the end. Hasbro, however, desperately wanted to feature the new Rodimus Prime toy, and pushed for his quick demise in Act I. It's funny, but if you read the techspecs for Galvatron and Rodimus they aren't even leaders of their respective factions, in fact it's specifically implied Galvatron is Megatron's subordinate. The cartoon never intended to replace those originals, it was Hasbro who forced them too. Though this was nothing new to them.

You are totally missing my point. I am not arguing you about the quality of those cartoons. I am just stating that those cartoons were great memories of many peoples' childhood and that many of us DON'T CARE what the intentions were behind the shows. Like any cartoon put out isn't put out for the purpose of being a commercial success... get off the high horse.

Nobody cares.

NOBODY CARES.

Seriously. Like, I really don't care what people on the Transformers messageboards say about Beast Wars because when I was growing up Beast Wars was the ****. And I have great childhood memories of Beast Wars. So **** all that ****.
