Looking back now, the go-bots really did suck

How about this. I like the G1 Transformers Characters better than the Beast Wars/Machines, Transformers Animated combined. :)
Again this is that whole casual fan problem that came up when Bay was making Transformers. There is no character more complex or with a more interesting characters arc than Dinobot, period. Though I see consistently people act like Starscream and Optimus were complex and interesting characters. Of them, I'd say there was a certain life brought by Chris Latta and Cullen, simply because they primarily voiced those two characters, but the original Transformers was incredibly inconsistent with character use. Hound was Spike's closest friend in the first three episodes, then somehow it became Bumblebee. Ironhide would be tough in one episode, a push over in another. Ratchet's voice changed. Prowl became a mainstay for the first four, and then a nobody after that. None of the characters went anywhere or matured at all, until the third season, the characters everyone claims to loathe. So, I'd say if you believe the characters in that series were the best, you need to branch out a bit, because they were pretty undelevoped.

I'd take a huge dump on Dinobot. You don't name a Transformer after a Team Name. That's ridiculous.

You're still arguing the quality of the cartoon. Which, really, has nothing to do with why people like knowsbleed enjoyed the show.
People never enjoyed the show though, that's the problem. IT GOT CANCELLED! Even when it was on they shipped most of the animation off to a Korean studio. People remember the toys not the show. I mean, we've been through this, I showed Equint77 five episodes to which he said "took his opinion down a few steps". The point is the toys were cool, the show was not. People only think the show was cool because after it got cancelled Transformers managed to rebound through better shows (like Beast Wars) and improved toylines. If Transformers had remained dead for the past twenty five years there wouldn't be a single person on here who would even bother to sing it's praises.

As I like to say, true fans don't bash G1.
Go to the messageboards; they all bash it. There is a fringe group who still likes the show, most Transformers fans, the ones that fill BOTCON every year and buy the toys in droves don't like G1.

I'm just gonna come out and say it, cause I've been tapdancing around this; quality wise, Season 3 is the best Transformers season.

I have the agree. Season 3 also has the best intro ever, and it seemed to be drawn in Japanimation style. Season 4 was *the* worst imo; crappy storytellling, and even worse drawing after the quality Season 3.

Funny how the Gobots had an evil female robot who was the coolest character in the show, but the Transformers (Well, American continuity I guess.) never featured any female Decepticons whatsoever. I guess Decepticon females wouldn't put up with Megatron's "I am your leader!!!" crap and decided to just bail on them.

P.S. Did you know that in the French dubbed version of the G1 cartoon Starscream was a femme bot? They hired a female voice actress to read all the lines.

Her name was Crasher, and Marilyn Lightstone played the hell out of her! Wish she had more voice work!

Any worse than naming a Transformer "Elita-1".

Funny you should say that, because the actress who voiced her, Marlene Aragon, would later play Jem's holographic computer, Synergy, on another Sunbow/Marvel series, Jem.

I heard her on an internet radio series called "Culture Klash" recently, and she still sounds good for a woman in her seventies. Hence, my signature below.

SB...

doesn't...

get...

it,..

G1 may not be the best written/drawn/sexed version of Transformers

G1 may be silly as hell compared to other renditions of Transformers

G1 may be a huge toy commercial that was written by a committee to sell as many toys to kids as possible in 1/2 an hour increments

G1 may be the most disrespected amongst hardcore Transformer fans

G1 may not be everything that people hype it up to be...

but...

I still love it.

and I don't care...

do not care

because it was a happy time in my life... and the thought of the joy that it brought me watching that show, playing with those toys with my friends and the imagination that it brought with it is greater than anything you can do to try and dash with your over-analyzing of a children's cartoon/half hour long toy commerical.

Shadowboxing must be stopped... no matter the cost.

Crasher. That's what her name was. Thanks. Man she was such an awesome villian.

I hate to quote this whole post but these are my sentiments exactly. I recently watched the first season on DVD w/ a group of guys and we all were taken back to a time when we were kids and this was the best thing on TV. Looking at it now the whole concept was ridiculous. The decepticons had no reason to ever transform into fighter jets or huge blaster guns or construction equipment but they did anyway. The idea of energon (sp?) cubes and the way they got it didn't make sense. Every episode including the beloved movie introduced brand new characters but everyone acted like these characters had been around from the beginning. Even w/ all of it's faults I still love and watch these cartoons.

I used to love Go-Bots, Scooter was my favorite back then & I looked over & over for a toy of him but could never find one so I ended up getting Crasher the black female car. I fogot what I did with her, I might have tore her apart like I did with all of my toys back then.:o I still have a Go-Bots coloring book from 1985 "24 years ago" that I never even finished coloring all the pictures of the Go-Bots in it. Boy was my coloring crappy back then, it was like color everything one color to get it over with LOL! I also still have a Voltron activity book that I have had for at least 25 years but I finished everything in it. Any other person would have probably thrown this stuff away many many years ago but to me it is nostalgia that represents a happier time in my life.

Now come on guys, there were some bad G1 episodes, yes, mostly ones after the movie, but there were some really good ones. I like the episode myself where Megatron manages to create a space bridge that drags Cybertron into Earth's orbit. That was a good one. And the other one I liked was when Megatron fooled the puny flesh creatures into thinking the Autobots were really evil. Was that Megatron's Master Plan?

P.S. Remember, Beast Wars is a spin off from G1 continuity so you bash G1 you bash Beast Wars as well.

You hated all three episodes that much, huh? I didn't think Rebirth was that bad, even though Crosshairs sounded like Reagan.

Actually, most of those were good, people just didn't watch them because they didn't feature Optimus that's the irony. Madman's Paradise, Ultimate Weapon, Call of the Primitives, Theif in the Night, Dark Awakening, The Return of Optimus Prime, Money is Everything, Only Human (they f---ing fought Cobra Commander!), The Ghost of Starscream and Dweller in the Depths were all way better in terms of storytelling and animation.

Here, watch.

Not really. Beast Wars is probably why you think G1 was even watchable in the first place. They cherrypicked elements from the comic, cartoon and fan fiction (and not evenly so) and created a retconned Transformers Universe. Provided motivation for the original voyage to Earth, added in Primus (originally absent) and even completely fabricated events for their purposes. It was no more based in G1 than the X-Men movies are based off of Stan Lee's run on X-Men.

A gorilla.

What's wrong with that?
I think in concept Beast Wars kind of sucks. The idea of a robot transforming into an organic creature, which is weaker than the robot (in theory) is pretty unexciting. The execution, on the other hand, was outstanding.

Silverbolt's transformation was the ****. Even if his character was kinda lame.

Prime-based animal transformers appeared as various animals in various series, including a bat (early Beast Wars toy line), gorilla (Beast Wars) and lion (Beast Wars Neo, a Japanese series). Out of those three, I'd say a gorilla certainly makes the most sense.

And didn't one of his tranformations include him riding a f'ing surfboard.
