Who might she be playing? Surely there should be a discussion thread.

Shuri, he should be cast as T'Challa's sister

The smart money is on Shuri. Or a Dora Milaje lieutenant. I hope it's not Monica. I don't want her to be the Jane Foster of Black Panther. I wouldn't put it past Marvel to give Luptia a cruddy throwaway role. Still pissed about the way they used Djimon in Guardians. Great actor in a complete waste of a role. He must be kicking himself, wishing that he held out for the Black Panther movie. I still hope they can find a way to cast him as someone.

In THR's exclusive they sounded positive that she would play a love interest.

N’yongo’s character has not been revealed, although she will be the Panther’s love interest.

However, Feige did say that BP would be "a big geopolitical action adventure that focuses on the family and royal struggle of T'Challa in Wakanda, and what it means to be a king."

Which gives me hope that Shuri hasn't been written out entirely.

Maybe she's playing Shuri AND the love interest. They might have a Jaime/Cersei kinda relationship. ;)

That would be great to have her as his sister and MBJ as his brother. Or they retcon White Wolf as his brother

I think Marvel is going to either:

Cast her as Shuri and make her not T'Challa's sister.

Or Cast her as Monica Rambeau.

Or someone else.

She should stay as his sister. Otherwise that would just be weird. And gross.

I can't see her as Monica Lynne. She can't pass for an American. I really hope she can play Shuri, she's perfect for the part.

I hope there is no Monica Lynne. No more un-super girlfriends in the MCU. They're boring.

It would be funny if they cast her as a new character called Aurora Monrow

Consider the idea that Americans come in all shapes and colors. What if people born in America that look like Lupita are just as American as you and I?

Honestly... going Storm-lite is probably a good idea. They can't do it that directly, but there's a few ladies in T'Challa's wheelhouse who have powers. Nakia, Nightshade, though they tend towards the villainous variety... that could be a good twist, imho.

Ignorant as hell. Gabourey Sidibe, Danai Gurira, and Viola Davis can "pass for Americans" but Lupita can't?

I agree, Nakia or Nightshade would be interesting choices. Maybe she could start out working with the villain and then turn good when she falls in love with T'challa; that would be something we haven't seen yet in the MCU.

I really want her as Shuri but really, I don't care who she's playing I'm just glad she's in it.

I'm glad too, and I'm sure they'll do a good job with her character whomever it is.

Her playing the love interest leads me to one of two conclusions, though: Either they're going for a super-young Shuri (like 12 years old) or there is no Shuri in the MCU.

Because it's hard to imagine them casting some other actress to play Shuri and Lupita to play another character when Lupita fits Shuri better than anyone.

I think Shuri will still be in it but she won't be that much younger than T'Challa. Maybe Marvel really feels another role suits Lupita more.

Um, Viola Davis IS American. So is Gabourey Sidibe (she's half Senegalese).

Danai Gurira does not pass for African American either. She's Zimbabwean. African Americans do not look like first generation Africans. That is not 'ignorant'. Black people do not all look the same. Lupita is obviously a foreigner.

There's so much wrong with the above comment. Danai doesnt pass for African American? Firstly, Danai was born in Iowa and lived there until she was 5 before moving to Africa and then later came back.

Yes, not all black people look the same but you're deluded if you think African Americans are all easily distinguishable from blacks born and raised in Africa.

Have you even been to Africa? There are people there who don't fit the narrow stereotypical view of an "African look". On the flipsid there are black people who live in the US or UK who have never stepped foot in Africa and yet look as though they'd fit right in within the streets of Lagos, Kampala or Acra.

There's nothing obvious about Lupita. There are plenty of black women who look like her that were not born and have never lived in Africa. We obviously know Lupita was born there but it's obtuse to make such generalised assumptions for all cases.

Like I said, ignorant.

Danai is an actual American citizen in real life, born in Iowa, who also happens to play an American character on The Walking Dead.

If Margot Robbie (Australian) and Charlize Theron (South African) can "pass as Americans", any actress can.

When making a point, please do so without referring to your fellow poster as "ignorant." We can disagree civilly. If this continues, further action will be taken.
