Mafia III

Actually Mafia by definition is La Cozanostra, the Italian Mob, the Russian Version isn't called the mafia, is called the Bratva, the Japanese version is the Yakuza. All these others are just compared to the Mafia, they aren't really Mafia.

You're half right. It was used to describe the Sicilian mob back in the day. The modern definition is, as I said, used to describe any organized crime group.

So was it a new modern definition by the 1960's?

I'm not sure when the definition changed, I imagine it was a gradual thing. But one could argue given that it's a current video game, the developers are using modern vernacular.

Alternatively one could also be overthinking the title of a video game.

I'd imagine the term changed definition in line with it's "glorification" in movies.

Hopefully this doesn't disappoint like Mafia 2 did (for me). The first Mafia was a great game.

I never played the first Mafia game, but Mafia II was great, with the exception of the dead open world. I often compare it to LA Noire, because both had great ideas and stories, but the open worlds were not fully utilized to have some added depth.

There is a lot of gameplay now on Youtube. Here is some:

Looks really good. Can't wait to play this! I'm disappointed that the police are not like in Mafia II in this. They don't give you speeding tickets.

The wait is almost over! The release is on Friday. I'm getting this on release or soon after. This is not exactly what I wanted from Mafia III but it looks great. I'm excited!

I'm excited. I was expecting to pick it up in store, but I just remembered that I'll be at NYCC all weekend so I'm going to have it shipped. Thankfully I have the following Monday off so hopefully I can get into this before picking up Tomb Raider and WWE 2k17 the next day.

Amazon Prime just started offering 20% discounts on preorders in Canada (I imagine the states have had that for a while, but we're a little slow), so I grabbed a month trial of it and used it to preorder Mafia. The conditions said the trial had to be active during order and delivery, so it worked perfectly for this. And then I can cancel it when it delivers. I wouldn't order from Amazon enough to justify Prime's cost, but... 20% is 20%.

Been playing the game for a few hours and it's awesome. Never played any other Mafia games, but I'm digging the hell outta this one. LOVE LOVE LOVE that some of the rifles have slings on them. Just such an overlooked detail in these types of shooters, so kudos for the dev team for including them.

Can't wait until they add the ability to customize Lincoln. The lack of customization has been my only gripe so far and that's something that's getting corrected soon.

Best Buy delivered this early, so I've had it for a day, but only put about a half hour into it because of NYCC stuff. My only complaint so far is that the controls feel a little floaty, especially when driving. I still still GTA has the best driving mechanics.

Other than that though, I can't explain it, but it feels like its going to be great. Only big complaint I've heard from industry people is that the open world feels empty, but this was the same case as Mafia II, so it's not a big setback for me.

I received it a day early as well. I've been enjoying it a great deal so far. I love the setting of the game. And I love the different routes you can take to completing missions and objectives. I just need to feed someone to a gator now.

that makes me less interested in this. A big open world without much to see or do is pointless. Story doesnt really draw me but more of the ability to get lost in the environment. If it really does feel empty than thats a disappointment.

That's how the last Mafia game was iv heard. Like yea it was open world, but it was a much more linear, story driven experience. IDK tho, never played the last one

I can do without an open world. The story is my main concern.

The thing that I didn't like about MAfia II, and is a big reason why I compare it more to L.A. Noire than GTA, is because the only way to free roam is to start up a "chapter" or mission. It's not like GTA where you're dropped into this living, breathing world. The only way to explore would be to neglect the main objective of a mission.

I'm not sure if that's the case with this, but there's still collectibles to collect, so some exploration is warranted. I expect there are also side quests, but just don't expect much from NPC acting on their own.

Yea that's what a buddy of mine was telling me last night. He's like don't expect it to be like a GTA, at all.

So far it's not a big deal. The story is super intriguing and I love the gameplay. I do wonder why the devs felt they needed an open world though. I mean if you aren't going to use the world for gameplay, why bother with creating it when you could just make a linear experience.

It's hard to say. I guess it's because it's hard to make a linear game and still include driving sections, unless they are on rails. But, to em at least, once I see a driving section that doesn't limit me to one particular course, I immediately want to see how far off the path I can go.

Not to mention, this was most likely developed during the period that we see now where most games have some kind of open-world aspect to it. There has definitely been some fatigue going on with open-world games, its still too early to see games adapt to that.

Uncharted 4 had some pretty good driving sections in madagascar and on the island. Yeah there is a path they want the player to go while driving but its open enough to allow some play and not feel quite like a rail. But thats probably harder to pull off when the setting is a major city with a bunch of main roads, side roads, and alleys. It would immediately destroy immersion if the player tried to turn onto a clearly visible side road and hit an invisiable wall. Thats probably why an open world design was chosen for these games.

Im enjoying it so far, storytelling is tight and engaging, much like its predecessor

Yeah, it's easier to do it in a location that allows for open space with only one destination. But for a city, it doesn't feel as great immersive when you hit that invisible wall, unless there is some reason for it, like how GTA would block off certain sections of a map early on in some of their older games.

I guess a game like Mafia should be considered an open-world environment, but not a sandbox.

Been playing this most of the day and I really like it. It's gameplay feels pretty last gen, but I actually enjoy it for that. It reminds me most of The Godfather game, which I think is still one of my all time favorites. It's got some bugs and wonky technical stuff, but the story is really solid and I'm having a great time going through it.

The details in this game are really awesome. Things like Lincoln shifting gears or the aforementioned rifle slings to the way enemies react when they are shot. I shot this one dude in the gut ONE time and I watched him stumble back towards a wall and while he's sliding down the wall he's giving me the bird. All that from one shot to the stomach which is exactly how it should be. This has got some great shooting mechanics.

shot a dude on a dock, he stumbled and fell into the water

and got eaten by a gator

and I got an acheivement
