New York good Samaritan was running to aid an injured motorist

CATSKILL, N.Y. - Police say a New York man running to the aid of another motorist fell to his death from a bridge, apparently because he didn't know there was a large gap between lanes.

State police say 44-year-old Kevin Ryan, of Mount Kisco, was traveling on Route 23 in the town of Catskill, 30 miles south of Albany, around 10:45 p.m. Sunday when he noticed a vehicle overturned in the opposite lane.

Investigators say Ryan stepped over a concrete barrier unaware there was a 17-foot wide gap between the eastbound and westbound lanes of the bridge. He fell nearly 50 feet to the rocks and concrete below. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Man, that's terrible.

god thats awful, i say this is has been a depressing week of deaths.

that is one of the saddist things i've heard. bummer

you know what they say, bad things happen to good people.

Bad things happen to stupid people. Don't run half cocked into a rescue not knowing where you're stepping especially when it's not even an emergency situation.

Moral of the story is never help anyone in need.

I don't really get you. You seem to have so much sympathy/mercy for criminals et. al, but when a man falls to his death while helping someone ikn the heat of the moment you call them stupid and don't display any sympathy? WTF?

Thats messed up but how could you not see a 17 foot gap. I feel bad for his family.

That sucks. You'd think there would be some kind of warning posted there though. They have warnings telling you that coffee=hot so dumbasses won't sue from being burned but this is an actual case where a warning could have saved a life.

The dude ran into a ****ing hole. A gap. An over what? Minor injuries. He didn't fall to his death while helping someone he fell to his death trying to get to someone who didn't need his help in the first place.

But even so... Don't you think that's kind of a cold reaction for someone who was trying to do something nice?

So he, in essence, ran off the bridge itself? There's just a big hole in the bridge, with no girders or railings or anything around it?

Edit:

He stepped over the barrier. Got it.

No its not a cold reaction. The guy was not paying attention and payed for it.

Thanks Blindfighter!

What he said. The nice thing would've been to call emergency services and then not dead himself.

Yeah...making a mistake during a very stressful situation (with you mind concerned about the well being of another person) must mean you're stupid :whatever:

Thank you, Sentinel.
I guess neither of you ever makes any mistakes, eh? He doesn't deserve sympathy, but someone on the sex offenders registry does, right? :whatever:

The situation didn't need to be stressful though. He could've avoided it altogether by letting the professional rescue workers do their job. He should've called 911 and then waited for people with training to their job.

What did his actions get us? More work for the rescue workers.a

Well I've never made any mistakes so big that I've died from them if that's what you mean.

To their credit at least sex offenders didn't kill themselves trying to be heroes so I guess in my opinion they do deserve a little more credit than this guy.

Well, that's something that we are obviously never gonna agree on. Like everything else.
Oh, Walrus. You and your messed up sensibilities. :p
