Manning Convicted of Biggest Breach of US Classified Data in US History

I can't believe people are actually calling Manning "she" now. I guess he finally snapped. Or he thought he'd have it easier in women's prison.

I think Obama will probably commute his sentence, though I think a full pardon is unlikely, he's the one who put Manning in prison after all. They obviously wanted to make an example out of him.

His lawyer stated that he up until now kept it a secret because while he was in the military it was during the "don't ask don't tell" and that had a lot of psychological effects on him as well....I don't think he just decided this now.

I contradict myself from earlier making fun of the situation, only because I didn't read into it enough and just blindly made a bad joke about it.

We give smoke to children ??

Robin Williams said so in an HBO special, it must be true

French people used to smoke a lot. These days they're not even in the top 50.

Now kids just drink wine.

She didn't snap, she was questioning her gender beforehand as well and has finally made her choice. Referring in that form is the respectful thing to do.

he is right now a man. so he is a ''he''.

#1 you can't buy cigarettes if you're not 18+
#2 children don't drink alcohol on a regular basis, it's not a custom
#3 teenagers and young adults mostly drink hard stuff like vodka, tequila, whisky when they want to get stoned
#4 wine is for "old people" from the point of view of the youth.

That's just silly. Political correctness gone mad.

How is it silly? How is it political correctness gone mad? A person wants to be referred to in a certain way. We lose nothing by doing so. It's just polite.

I was just trying to joke around lol...people take me way too serious on these boards :yay:

Actually, no. She is not a man, she's a woman. She may have the body of a male (sex), but that does not affect one's gender (which is in one's head) and therefore their preferred pronouns. Male body =/= Man.

Unfortunately the scientific definition of ones gender is described by their sexual organs, not what society deems fit or one feels they are.

I have no problem calling him a her to be polite and respect their wishes. But unless a sex change procedure is done, she's male.

But why does that matter? We're not talking about a physical exam or anything, we're talking entirely from a social context. The hard, technical biology of it isn't relevant in this context.

Anyone care to explain this attention ****ing stunt to me? Its a bit fuzzy.

Eh yeah maybe I got the argument mixed up. Sorry.

Unless it's not that.

Being transexual has a stigma attached to it. It's not all that improbable that Manning kept it a secret for the sake of her military career, and later to keep it from being spun negatively during the course of the trial. Now, however, with the trial and the career over, there's nothing to lose from going public.

Actually, sex =/= gender. People often confuse the two.

I'll just dodge the entire gender issue and say "Manning" instead of trying to plod my way through that field of landmines of whether to refer to Manning as he or she at this stage.

Even if you believe in sex changes, and gender identity disorder, he's still a man since he hasn't even undergone the process. He hasn't even legally changed his name.

So yeah, he is a man right now. Now maybe he is genuinely sexually confused (not sure what the proper terminology is), and has wanted to be a woman long before all this, I don't know, but the timing for this announcement is rather suspect.

So what? If a person wants to be referred to in a certain way and doing so costs you nothing then you do it because that's just basic human decency. The technical medical side of it is irrelevant when it comes to being polite.

He hasn't even legally changed his name.

Been a bit too busy to get around to it as of late, I think.

Why? What's to gain from coming out as transexual now?

The timing I don't find suspect although the publicity is unnecessary IMO. If it was me personally, I would not want the added media propaganda and attention of changing gender at the same time I'm being tried for crimes against the country and potentially given a death sentence or life in prison.

Announcing it before or during the trial, that would be suspect and look more like an attention diverting stunt.

This ****s going on all over the world. It's not just America. Tell me in Russia if this happened they wouldn't of been taken out to the pasture and shot. Here we are just media ****es and thirst for drama.

No one has balls anymore. The generations of fighters and protesters are behind us. We are a world filled with iPhones, medication, and internet blogs. We much show sympathy over the internet with "like this if's", then help a women getting mugged on the street. We much rather med our kids instead of being good parents. We'd rather fatten our kids with fast food and spoil them with gifts then tell them they've done poorly, or to eat healthy.

This is a sad, sad world that's been developing the past 10-15 years.

WOW I am speechless dude...You nailed everything that is wrong with the world today. Bravo.

I feel like if a person asks to be referred to a certain way then it's just considerate to do so.

From now on let's write "he/she" to be objective :o
But seriously I agree with you. We should call anyone as he/she wishes out of politeness alone.

Also this whole gender thing isn't new. It happened before they found out it was her. Read the chat log where Manning tells the dirt bag hacker dude who turned her in.
