Drama Mare of Easttown (HBO,Limited Series)

Great finale but one thing is bugging me. Maybe someone who knows more about police investigations and phone records can fill me in here...

So Erin called John the night of the murder, and later texted his phone and told him to meet her at Brandywine Park. Ryan texted her back (as John) and said he would meet her. Now, I’m not sure what happened to Erin’s phone (they probably said but I forget). My guess is it was destroyed. But wouldn’t the police have been able to subpoena her cell phone provider and find out who she was calling and texting the night of the murder? There would have been a record of that even if the phone was destroyed. Or was she using a burner phone when she called John?

I'm not sure, but I do recall a line about Verizon dragging their feet and not being cooperative in the investigation or something like that. I remember it because it made me wonder how Verizon felt about being name-checked in that context, lol.

In his confession last night, John said he and Erin used burner phones.

I was misled by not being tech savvy. :O

I pictured a "burner" as a cheap/disposable, old-school flip that was only good for making voice calls. So when I saw the fancy text interface on the smart phone, I figured this was a major plot point! - that Erin had slipped up and used dude's main number by mistake. But apparently not. And apparently you can get "smart burner phones" that have modern text apps, etc.

Winslet - lead actress in a limited series
Nicholson - supporting actress in a limited series

I feel bad for leaving Smart out, but Hacks should really be her winner.

Yeah I think that’s what threw me too! I’ve been watching The Wire lately (never finished it for some dumb reason) and I always think of burners as junk flip phones.

The only time I still see flip phones is in movies or tv shows. Those phones have become screen shorthand for burner phones

I just finished, this series was absolutely excellent from beginning to end. When the story started to “wrap up” at the beginning of episode 7 i KNEW there had to be more to it and wow what a final twist. Winslet was excellent in this and Evan Peters and...well everyone really brought it.

Here’s my one small, small nitpick:

What was ultimately the point of Guy Pierce’s character? He seemed kind of extraneous in retrospect. I kept having this nagging feeling he would play into the story but he never did. I kept thinking “surely they cast Guy for a reason, he must he tied into mystery somehow :funny:

My understanding is that they had to recast the original actor (Ben Miles) my guess due to COVID restrictions at the time so he probably couldn't fly out of Europe to film.

Mare needed something good in her life.

Mare/Big Little Lies crossover season pls.

Really loved this show and eventhough I started it with a hangover over the weekend I was still pretty captivated by it and the peformances from Kate Winslet and Julianne Nicolson.

Kate Winslet just kills this role. She doesn't seem to miss these days.

It's coming back! Third season in the works as we speak.
OMG really? That's awesome! I knew they'd talked about S3 FOREVER but it never seemed like something that was actually happening. :mrk:

Very similar to Secrets and Lies. Still was very good.

‘Mare Of Easttown’: HBO Chief On Potential Second Season – Deadline

I honestly feel like there’s probably no good reason to risk a second season. There were no dangling plot threads that can justify keeping it going and I think one of the main attributes of the show was that the stuff like the murder and the shoot-out was very out of the ordinary for Mare.

Contrary to how things seem to be going lately, I think sometimes a limited series should stay limited.

Her story was closed out perfecting. However, I am personally down for more Mare. If they want to give me more Mare and they think there is a good story to tell, I will gladly accept more Mare.

This series wasn't explicitly based on any single book/novel, so it's really up to them whether they want to continue her story or not.

Kate Winslet and 'Mare of Easttown' score big with 2021 Emmy nominations

Whodunit? “Mare of Easttown” did, nabbing 16 Emmy nominations Tuesday morning, including one for anthology or limited series as well as three acting awards.

Oscar winner Kate Winslet, who picked up an accent to be proud of for her portrayal of Easttown detective Mare Sheehan, got her third Emmy nomination with a nod for lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie.

Winslet previously won the Emmy for lead actress in a miniseries or movie in 2011 for her work in the “Mildred Pierce” miniseries, another HBO effort.

Coincidentally, “Pierce” also landed a supporting actor Emmy win that year for costar Guy Pearce, who also played Winslet’s quasi-love interest in “Easttown.”

Meanwhile, Winslet’s costars Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters are nominated for supporting actress and actor, respectively, in a limited or anthology series.

It’s the first Emmy nomination for both supporting players. Nicholson played Lori Ross, Mare Sheehan’s best friend and confidant, while Peters took on the role of detective Colin Zabel, the cop brought in from out of town to help solve the murder of Easttown teen mom Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny).

“Mare” is up against “The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Underground Railroad,” “WandaVision” and “I May Destroy You” in the limited or anthology series category.

Well deserved! Loved the mini series!
