Marvel Prepping Four Series and a Miniseries

Shouldn't they work on S.H.I.E.L.D more before giving the go ahead for four more shows?!
No? They'll have different creative teams, and a lot of the problems people have with SHIELD stem from it being a network procedural rather than a serialized cable drama

They've got work to do on SHIELD, but it won't affect this

I´m just hoping that they don't try to "Joss Whedon-ise" these new shows and instead allow them to be their own thing based on their respective show runners vision.

I think that SHIELD is suffering from Joss's brother trying, and failing, to copy Joss's style of writing.

What I'm saying is that shouldn't they assess the results of AOS after a full season to see if it truly does turn out to be a success rather than putting four new shows into development right now.

Sounds like they are putting the cart before the horse on this one. AOS isn't what I would call a bonafide television hit right now and there's no guarantee any other show would fare better.

They haven't given themselves a lot of wiggle room in regards to the tone of their universe, so I don't see how a cable or premium show would change up in many meaningful way.

If they put programs on Netflix though, ratings won't matter. House of Cards, Hemlock Grove and Orange is the New Black have been successful for Netflix.

Personally I think they need to pull a DC here. Have plans....for sure, be ready. But see how SHIELD plays out as the season goes on, then when Season 2 nears break out all the news.

DC has a feel on what people want (though I still want SHAZAM!) and now can expand their brand with Flash, Gordon, and I guess Constantine. Add to that the fact that Flash will be a recurring character in Arrow Season 2 and you have a way to test to see if people respond well to the character.

I just don't want four shows to come on....then all go off really quickly because they're terrible.

I think it could be more interesting if they created a brand new tv-verse for these shows. That way you can have big events happening without having to explain why SHIELD or the Avengers didn't show up.

The new shows wouldn't be bound by already established events and could have very different tones compared to the cinema verse.

I agree. Weaving everything into one whole universe is admiral, but it's also very limiting as well.

Agreed I think they backed themselves into a corner with having everything connected because that means a lot of things are off limits to them. This is where they should take a page from DC and just have a TV universe and movie universe where then they can have more heroes show up.

It's very limiting because none of the heroes people really tune into see will be on the show and the ratings will drop quickly because of it. You can't have the Avengers show up with out it counting against their contract and some of those guys are already looking forward to being done with it.

That's why they should keep the focus on the smaller events and heroes, like heroes for hire, Punisher and Daredevill

It's already a success. Whether or not it holds for the rest of the season doesn't matter, only its future hinges on that. The audience interest was there, and other properties with other, perhaps more engaging characters can duplicate that and perhaps hold onto it

There's never any guarantee that another show would fare better, that doesn't mean you sit around and assume none will. Make the product and hope it clicks

There's plenty of "wiggle room" tonally, just look at how different their Phase 2 movies are from each other. It's true that Marvel probably won't put out the po-faced product some fans seem to want, but there are alternatives for those people. Clearly Marvel's product has a broad audience

Right, they won't show up. That's why you adapt/create other characters who audiences will hopefully have an interest in

But that's where the interest came from. Daredevil is more suited for the movies as well as Blade. Punisher would work but might repetitive after a while just like AOS. They have the rights to TV spider-man use it and introduce Miles. That would work for TV. But they can't make it work the way they want to right now.

Whatever happens I just want the shows to stay away from network television. It really is the worst kind of TV. Plots tend to be dumbed down and characters, especially heroes don't tread the line of morality, they are either good or bad. Where as cable shows' characters are morally ambiguous and makes for better TV IMO.

See we say it's Marvel but it's really the all powerful and ever money hungry house of mouse that see's Marvel for the cash cow it is and is intent on milking every penny they can out of it. I wonder when the heroes will start popping up at the parks since Universal's Islands of Adventure has the rights to the Marvel heroes as it stands right now

Well Marvel Studios and Disney are for profit companies, not charities. They exist to make money. That is a company's main function. That way, they can pay their bills, expand their properties, hire more people, and use more services from other companies. Which in turn, can cause those companies to expand. I for one welcome more Marvel content, and wish them well.

If we get 4 new shows and a mini my picks in order would be

1. Heroes For Hire
2. DD
3. Punisher
4. Moon Knight
Mini - Marvel Knights crossover

Heroes For Hire, is pretty much a lock. Fans have been calling for that show, since before Agents of Shield. Daredevil is very popular right now, so that is a good possibility. Fox canned plans for the Punisher series, but there is a fan base (including me) for him. Hopefully it's on AMC, FX, or HBO. Those networks could do him justice.

Moon Knight may not be popular enough, to carry a series, but he is connected to Heroes For Hire. And that would strengthen that series' potential. Agent Carter is going to be on ABC, so we might see some crossover with SHIELD. I realize that they are from two different time eras, but that would not exclude crossovers with villains, evil organizations, and other storylines.

I would like to see a Midnight Sons series. Ghost Rider (Dan Ketch), Daimon Hellstorm, Blade, Werewolf By Night, and Jennifer Kale. They could focus on supernatural threats, in the Marvel Universe. Most of those characters pretty much hate each other, so it could be very interesting. Horror/ supernatural series are big right now, so if done right it could work.

The problem with Marvel's television products be it live action and/or animated is not Disney's fault. If anything Disney has opened new doors for Marvel and has allowed Marvel to run itself. The problem lies at the door step of the executives they have in place and not necessarily Feige himself because thus far he has been wonderful on the front of motion pictures and marketing but I believe the issue is with Jeph Loeb and to an extent Joe Quesade. Jeph has no idea what is entertaining at all (i.e. Ultimate Spiderman, Agents of SMASH, Avengers Assemble or SHIELD to an extent) and he pulls most of his idea from Joe who seems to have an agenda of making Marvel the way he feels it should look (i.e. Brand New Day, X-Men in black leather, 40 million Avenger titles) and not what the die hard Marvel consumer actually likes to read or see. It's fine if you deviate from the source a little to get new viewers like the movies did but your animation and tv shows tend to deviate completely from the source. SHIELD should be a modern day spy thriller with characters that are known--The Countessa, Scorpio, Quartermain, GW Bridge, Jessica Drew, Bobbi Morse etc. So, as long as Jeph Loeb is the Television Development Executive all the product on tv will suffer.

iron fist should have his own show

More info:
Burbank, Calif. - Nov 7, 2013—The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) and Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) today announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel's most popular characters exclusively to the world's leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs leading to a mini-series programming event.

Led by a series focused on "Daredevil," followed by "Jessica Jones," "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage," the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell's Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel's "The Defenders" mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Yeah, I'm liking how this sounds. I've wanted serialized ventures for Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist for a while. Cage, I can take or leave, but it could be good depending on how it's played.

And the Defenders to top it off? Get the **** out!

I think that sounds great. It's a little funny that The Defenders is like a TV version of The Avengers with almost identical build up.

EDIT- Nvm I thought they were saying DD, Jones, Fist and Cage would be The Defenders.

Well, it mentions it as "culminating" and "reimagines", so I wouldn't rule anything out. Matt, Danny and Luke have all been members at one point, so no real issue there. I could see them wanting Jessica in to counter the sausage fest a bit.

If that was the design, I would guess (read: hope) they'd still fill out the roster a little to get a couple more characters in. Strange might be precluded by his probable film in Phase Three, but maybe Namor or Moon Knight. Hell, even Ghost Rider with the rights now back.

Wasn't Agent Carter going to be made too?

Wow, wow, holy ****, wow.

Now I just need a Punisher TV Show and my life would be complete.

YESS!!!!! This is amazing news. Marvel is on a hot streak right now. I'm so excited for these shows. And if these are successful, you bet your tail that we're going to get other Marvel Knights characters like the Punisher, Moon Knight, and Spider-woman! This made my day!

I was kinda hoping one of them was a Punisher series but maybe they use something as big as Punisher on Network TV or make a new Movie about him. However this news sounds great.
