Now that Lucasfilm and Marvel are under the Disney umbrella, Star Wars comics are leaving Dark Horse, and returning home to Marvel. The Walt Disney Company’s Lucasfilm Ltd. and Marvel Entertainment released a joint statement announcing that Marvel has been granted exclusive rights to create and publish Star Wars comics and graphic novels beginning in 2015.
Marvel Comics published the first Star Wars comic book, Star Wars #1, in March 1977, which went on to sell more than 1 million copies. The company went on to publish its Star Wars series for nine years. Dark Horse Comics took over the license in 1991 publishing fan-favorite titles such as Dark Empire and Star Wars: Legacy. Last year, Dark Horse released The Star Wars #1, an adaptation of George Lucas’ original rough-draft screenplay for the film.
“Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had,” said Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing, Disney Publishing Worldwide. “In 2015, the cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia and Chewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within the Star Wars universe.”
Reunited and it feels so good.

“We here at Marvel could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels,” said Marvel Worldwide Publisher and President, Dan Buckley. “The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away.”
No official dates have been released, but with Star Wars: Episode VII due out in theaters in December of 2015, one imagines that the initial comics may very well act as a lead in or tie-in to the next wave of the Star Wars cinematic universe.

I wonder if they'll restart the Expanded Universe, as much as i enjoyed it, i think that the C-Level Canon needs some clean up

IMO, the writing was on the wall for Dark Horse the moment Brian Wood's Star Wars series was an instant financial and criticial hit. Now I wonder how they are going to keep relevant considering their creator owned IPs are nowhere near on par with Image and their licensed IPs are not on par with IDW.

I don't see a complete reboot of the Expanded Universe. With Chee on board to clean up Star Wars continuity, I can see Disney keeping the stuff that feels more mainstream like the Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Empire, Brian Wood's series, the first Force Unleashed game, the television shows, and Shadows of the Empire while jettisoning the rest.

The tv shows are aboce C-Canon, so i don't think they need to be rebooted, but Thrawn, Dark Empire and much of the post-Episode VI material is probably going to be deleted, the films are going to go there, so it's not necessary to keep stories that are only going to get in the way. And The Force Unleached games, while great fun should definitelly be wiped out IMAO, the main character is just way too powerful.

They didn't, and it was honestly for the better.

Any guess on what comics we may expect? I honestly hope we don't get too many mini series, would prefer a full ongoing one along with some others here and there.

So, they're aparently going to quick start their new line with 2 ongoing series

And there may be a Leia comic too:

I hope one of these comics deals with the Post-Return of the Jedi time, there are some 30 years in between Episode VI and VII to explore.

Got some SW comic announcements.

Marvel is launching back into “Star Wars” comics with major creative Force, with three series – a core title, plus a Darth Vader ongoing and a Princess Leia miniseries — rolling out in January, February and March.

...........

Editor in Chief Axel Alonso said that Marvel was working with Lucasfilm’s story group, and that the comics’ part of the saga will be as relevant as any other medium’s: “These stories really count,” he said.

Not a big fan of the new artwork, Dark Horse did an amazing job with the property, Marvel's aproach doesn't look as interesting. Either way i'll read it, the Post Episode IV time is ripe for material, but i also hope that after Leia they explore other times too.

How the hell am I going to organize my trades? Move the Dark Horse books to the Marvel section? Or keep them as is and put the Marvel ones in the Marvel section when they come out? :o

You could separate them between Canon and Legends, each line organized by chronology of course.

I've had my Infinites and The Star Wars at the very start of my DH stuff, which kicks off with the Qui Gonn and Obi Wan stuff, going through to Empire's End.

The real question is should we try to put the Marvel stuff in there or buy new versions of the movie adaptions to slot in with the new Marvel stuff? I say "we", I do of couse mean anyone crazy enough to care that much, by which I mean me.

Just line up the new material Marvel releases in chronological order separate from the rest of your collection, i doubt they're going to make new film adaptations of the first 6 episodes.

I'll just put all my Stars Wars books and comics under its own special section. I'll throw in Star Trek too

The first issue of the Darth Vader spin-off has just been released

[BLACKOUT]Seems like Vader just wiped out all the sand people that were left. The whole thing with this agent of the Emperor sounds interesting, excited to see where it will go.[/BLACKOUT]
