Phillip K. Dick’s Adjustment Team is coming to the movies - at least providing some brave studio is willing to take a punt on a Matt Damon sci-fi romance movie. So, no question then. This will get snapped up, recession or no recession.

According to Variety, the proposed movie version has been retitled Adjustment Bureau, for all the Kafkaesque implications that provides, and comes as a package: Damon to star, George Nolfi to direct from his own screenplay. Nolfi previously scripted Ocean’s Twelve (which is my favorite of the three) and The Bourne Ultimatum (again, my favorite of the three) and is now inking the screenplay for Bourne 4.

The premise of the original Adjustment Team story is a good one, though certain elements will be familiar to anybody who has seen Dark City: a real-estate salesman discovers that his reality is a big ol’ fake, controlled by mysterious overlords who change it up as part of some enigmatic process. If I remember correctly, this salesman has a wife who has to have her experience changed out of sync with her husbands - but I might be wrong, I read it almost 20 years ago now. I might just be remembering Dark City. I have that with Bladerunner and Electric Sheep too, in some respects, and I’ve even mistaken Minority Report for a Phillip K. Dick adaptation before - but it’s okay, I’ve come to my senses now and won’t be fooled again. It’s so clearly nothing of the sort, no matter what they titled it.

We had a wild run on Phillip K. Dick options a few years back but, thankfully, that dried up before they ran the author’s name into the ground once and for all. Then, more recently, duelling Dick biopics were expected. One of them, Tony Grisoni’s The Owl in Daylight, never entered production and Your Name Here, which stars Bill Pullman as “William J. Frick” in a quasi-Valis mish-mash of alternative realities, hasn’t yet made it into wide distribution.

Might be ok, this is a wait and see deal for me.

Yeah, it may turn out awesome, but its title is... :sleepy:

I actually read this story last week. As with most adaptations from Dick's work, the movie is most likely going to take inspiration from the concept. The short story format just doesn't lend itself to a cinematic translation.

The story is quirky though, and I admit I kinda got confused in the middle of the book. I presume they're going to add many more elements to it. It was a pretty straightforward arc.

Universal Sets Up The Adjustment Bureau
Source: Variety
March 5, 2009

Universal Pictures is finalizing a deal with Media Rights Capital for Matt Damon-starrer The Adjustment Bureau, a contemporary love story with sci-fi overtones that was written and will be directed by George Nolfi.

Variety says Nolfi will produce with Chris Moore and Michael Hackett. Production will begin in September.

Nolfi, who wrote The Bourne Ultimatum, is also writing the next Jason Bourne film for Damon and director Paul Greengrass.

In The Adjustment Bureau, Damon will play David Norris, a charismatic congressman who seems destined for national political stardom. He meets a beautiful ballet dancer named Elise Sellas, only to find strange circumstances keeping their sparks from catching fire. Norris discovers forces are at work to keep them apart, and he peels the layers to find out why. The action takes place all over Manhattan.

looks really good... like a twilight zone episode lol

it looks really really good.

The music trailer in the music was so recognizable, that I couldn't figure out where I heard it from. Then it came to me: Kick Ass. (When Hit-Girl is trying to save her dad and David)

Philip K Dick is awesome awesome awesome, but this looks a bit too much like The Box or something. Which is a ****ing terrible movie.

The Box wasnt as bad as people make it out to be

Looks like a episode of Fringe...I'll probably see it on cable though.

I really enjoyed the trailer, too bad it's been pushed from this September to March 4, 2011.

You're right. It was worse.

As for this, I do get a "Box" feeling from it, but there is enough talent here for it to be good. Damon and Blunt are usually reliable. Hell, just the shot of Blunt's legs in the trailer made me willing to purchase a ticket for this movie.

I wondered what happened to this film wow all the way to March!!!!!!!!!!

those posters get a big meh, though I'm excited about the movie itself. As to the earlier comments about The Box, that is one of the most crap movies in recent memory

I sense a Jimmy Kimmel spoof on this

Looks like Emily Blunt only has one leg.

Roger Sterling is in this and therefore I'm compelled to go see it.
