Shane Black, whose Warner Bros. action-comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer, became a small cult hit three years ago, has been hired by Universal Pictures to direct Cold Warrior, the spy thriller script from Chuck Mondry about a spy from the Cold War era who comes out of retirement to team with a younger agent from the new school to confront a domestic terrorism threat orchestrated by Russia. Before directing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Black was best known for his screenwriting, particularly the "Lethal Weapon" movies, The Last Boy Scout and The Last Kiss Goodnight.

Looking forward to this although I hope Black takes a pass at the script b/c it seems odd to hire him and not have him do a polish.

Beat me to it....I agree hopefully he gets a crack at the script.

Unless the script doesn't need him to polish it. But then again, he can't very well deprive us of his signature dialogue.

I'm just happy to see him getting more studio work. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a stellar debut for him as a director, it's just a shame that WB screwed the pooch so royally on promoting and distributing the film.

Shane Black is my hero. :D

I'm loving the sound of the film.

No doubt Black will give the script a polish. I cant wait for this.

Mel Gibson is in talks to reunite with Lethal Weapon screenwriter Shane Black for the Universal Pictures spy thriller Cold Warrior. Black will direct from a script by Chuck Mondry.

The film is about a spy from the Cold War era who comes out of retirement to team with a younger agent from the new school to confront a domestic terrorism threat orchestrated by Russia.

The film will be produced by Michelle Manning, David Greenblatt and Anthony Bagarozzi are also producing.

Gibson starts shooting How I Spent My Summer Vacation in March and will likely segue to Cold Warrior in June.

Oughta be very cool... though I wish Black would do a sequel to KKBB.

Get Danny Glover to co star as some mentor spy to Gibsons character and the reunion would be all set.

I love Shane Black so much. Easily my favourite writer.

Gotta put this on one of my anticipated lists, like dude said, Black is awesome.

*expects Sam Worthington to be cast or rumored to be cast in this movie*

:o

This sounds great though.
