With the recent release of the video game "Epic Mickey," I've started to ponder an interesting facet of Disney's history... Mickey Mouse is Disney's most recognizeable character and also one of their oldest, and yet there hasn't been a feature film specifically about him. He's was in Fantasia and he had a cameo in "A Goofy Movie" (which is also deserves note for Goofy being one of the few characters of Disney's canon shorts who has his own feature film) as well as appearances in DTV movies and TV specials, but despite being the face of Disney studios, Mickey does not have a feature-length theatrical movie of his own. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's ever found this a bit odd.

So, do you think that it's about time that Mickey got a movie of his own, or would it be doomed not to rise out of the shadow of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks? I'd say if Disney was going to make such a movie, I'd trust them to get it right today a lot more than I would have 10 years ago. We've got John Lasseter running things now after all, not Michael Eisner. I guess the big question would be what kind of story they could possibly conjure up that would be worth the 80+ year wait? Would expectations be too high, or would the fact that people aren't sure what to expect from a Mickey movie give the creative team lots of freedom?

And of course there's the inevitable question-- would Disney actually be interested in making a Mickey movie after 80+ years of sitting on the possibility, or should I file this with the minimally sanitized Walt Disney biopic?

The last theatrical short he had was Runaway Brain, which some people panned beacause they felt it was too dark. If they could stretch it out for 90 minutes like they're doing with Pooh, whatever.

I loved Runaway Brain, but then again I was raised on those depraved Looney Tunes...

It would be nice with a Mickey feature. I was thinking that maybe he could appear in the upcoming "Magic Kingdom".

Since Disney owns Marvel now maybe Mickey could do a Marvel character inspired movie, like Spider-Mouse or Iron Mouse, now that would be pretty funny. All the other Disney characters could also be turned into a Marvel inspired character along with Disney's own Gizmo Duck joining them.

Yer joking, ye have to be.

There are only 2 places where Marvel and Disney's characters should intermingle-- Disney World, and Kingdom Hearts 3.

And in poorly written erotic fanfic.

I was never really a massive fan of Mickey, he always seemed too 'nice' compared with the Looney Tunes. Having said that, I just watched the Runaway Brain and I enjoyed that.

If Runaway Brain wasn't very well received would a movie featuring a different or 'darker than usual' take on Mickey be successful? Although I did hear that Disney are wanting to sort of re-brand him... take him from his pleasant side to his more devious side. So perhaps such a movie could work.

I've also seen a video of Mickey's Philharmagic 3D short film (which mainly features Donald) but I enjoyed that too so perhaps they could do something that combines them (albeit somewhat similar) ideas into one solo Mickey film.

Personally I'd do a film teaming him with Donald in some capacity. They could do something based on the old Mega Drive game, World of Illusion, that sees Mickey and Donald transported to a fantasy world and try to get home, with Pete as the final boss.

Or they could do something with the competitive neighbours angle or have them taking part in a Wacky Races style race and include Goofy and have Pete as the cheating villain.

What Disney is trying to do going back to the roots and reintroducing the more mischievous side of Mickey's personality, starting with "Epic Mickey".

I think Runaway Brain is a good demonstration of how to make Mickey funny in spite of him being an inherently nice guy. The fact that he's so nice in a way actually makes him fun to mess with when shenanagins happen. In Runaway Brain, we got to see Mickey pushed to the point of snapping, which is what makes the cartoon a lot more edgy than Mickey's past theatrical shorts. That element gave it a slightly more Warner Bros. feel, while still maintaining Disney's signature sense of timing. The fact that Mickey is normally such a nice guy means that when you actually manage to push his buttons, the results are even funnier.

Some people obviously didn't like that since Disney has always had a reputation of being family friendly (whereas the Looney Tunes were originally intended for adults), but I certainly appreciated that Disney was allowing something fresh to be done with Mickey that took him out of the safety zone. A prospective Mickey movie doesn't necessarily have to be that edgy, but I think Disney as they are now would be more open to doing something with Mickey that is outside of the safety zone. Even as far back as Fantasia we saw that Mickey could have a mischievous streak beneath the cute and friendly exterior, and that has been revisited in recent years including the new Epic Mickey game.

Some movie involving the Disney villains and heroes ala Kingdom Heart but not written like a crossover fic. That would be an interesting idea.

I love these characters but I'm not so sure about a Mickey feature film. Characters like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are more mascots now than characters for full length films.

But the new Mickey game for the wii looks very fun!

Mickey should be hip and edgy, give him attitude you know with sunglasses on to let other people know he's not to be messed with..........like Poochie.

They've done that.

watching that runaway brain now
why haven't i seen this before :wow:

It was directed by Chris Bailey I just found out, the dude that worked on Kim Possible and the Clerks animated series. If they ever decide to do that feature flick, he should be on board.

Well that explains why Runaway Brain was so awesome. I would argue that Kim Possible was the best thing that ever happened to The Disney Channel.

Just saw runaway brain for the first time ever.Have to saw I would love a feature film like that.I think it can be done.
