With the recent release of the video game "Epic Mickey," I've started to ponder an interesting facet of Disney's history... Mickey Mouse is Disney's most recognizeable character and also one of their oldest, and yet there hasn't been a feature film specifically about him. He's was in Fantasia and he had a cameo in "A Goofy Movie" (which is also deserves note for Goofy being one of the few characters of Disney's canon shorts who has his own feature film) as well as appearances in DTV movies and TV specials, but despite being the face of Disney studios, Mickey does not have a feature-length theatrical movie of his own. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's ever found this a bit odd.
So, do you think that it's about time that Mickey got a movie of his own, or would it be doomed not to rise out of the shadow of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks? I'd say if Disney was going to make such a movie, I'd trust them to get it right today a lot more than I would have 10 years ago. We've got John Lasseter running things now after all, not Michael Eisner. I guess the big question would be what kind of story they could possibly conjure up that would be worth the 80+ year wait? Would expectations be too high, or would the fact that people aren't sure what to expect from a Mickey movie give the creative team lots of freedom?
And of course there's the inevitable question-- would Disney actually be interested in making a Mickey movie after 80+ years of sitting on the possibility, or should I file this with the minimally sanitized Walt Disney biopic?
