Microsoft and Sony beware. Fear the Wii.

That article showed a much better understanding of Nintendo's business model than I've seen anywhere on this board or on any other blog. It was a very good read. Of course, there's no guarantee that any of that stuff will work out, but Nintendo's strategy is still sound.

he third factor is that the disruption strategy takes time to build. The Wii will not be a constant best seller. After launch, expect sales to crawl and naysayers chant, “Gamecube Part Two! LOL!” The risk is that this dip may be too long before momentum can be rebuilt. The DS had the PSP outsell it in every market until disruptive software began to arrive. The Wii is dependent on those same factors. And, unlike the DS, the Wii is closed off to the outside world. How do you show people the new disruption? This is the reason why Wii Sports is bundled with non-Japanese Wii systems.

so true

First of all, to be feared you need a cooler name than Wii.

True. But to be successful, you probably don't want to base your entire system on technology that has already lost the war (Blue Ray) and charging at the price of twice one of the competetors and still a hundred bucks more than the more "serious threat too though".

Bump.

Listen to me, people, this article is the most important thing you'll ever read.:wow:

Are you talking about blu-ray losing to HD-DVD?

Pretty much.

1. While HD-DVD has sold more players than blu-ray. Blu-ray has made A LOT MORE money than HD-DVD has. Like 42% more. I hardly call that blu-ray has already lost the war to HD-DVD.

2. Blu-ray has more support than HD-DVD. Again I'd hardly call that another reason why blu-ray has already lost the war to HD-DVD

3. Despite what people are saying, the Playstation 3 is not going to be a failure despite Sony's ******ed strategy. It is going to be a success like the Xbox 360 and Wii are going to be. As a matter in fact it will probally win this console generation with a VERY slim margin, simply because of name recognition of the console and it's franchise games (Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Tekken, and Devil May Cry). Most analysts predict that the Playstation 3 will come out on top with a VERY slim margin. My point is that every Playstation 3 will have a blu-ray DVD player in it. All Playstation 3 games will use blu-ray DVD disks. The Xbox 360's HD-DVD player, is an optional add-on. At the moment, no game is being made for HD-DVD on the Xbox 360. All those people who are going to buy Playstation 3s are going to have a blu-ray player by DEFAULT. Again, another reason why blu-ray shouldn't be considered the automatic loser in this stupid "format war."

4. I think that both HD-DVD and blu-ray are going to come out as losers in this so called "format war."

a. It's too soon for a new video format

b. They are really freaking expensive

c. They aren't that big of a technological leap compared to when we were in the transition of VHS to DVD.

Well I can't see the future, but I don't think PS3 will win. Trust me, I much prefer Sony over Microsoft and think they have better exclusives (the RE ones that don't go to Nintendo, which are most, go to Sony, Metal Gear Solid and until recently first dibs on GTA), but between licensing out games (which I know they recalled but definetly put a BAD taste in EVERYONE'S MOUTH that is still there) and the overcharged price tag.....

I just don't think it will sell as well.

And about Blu-ray, I was rooting for the Ray but the fact is that they delayed their players, they are being outsold by HD-DVDs which usually means it will continue this trend and in the last year it has lost support (when it already had smaller support than HD-DVD) from two more studios.

For this reason it looks like the industy is going over to HD-DVD. If you lose studios it doesn't matter if you have a slightly larger profit margin because it is likely to drop if you can't sell the software. So an edge (and excuse for the lousy $100 more than Microsoft) is lost.

Personally I think 360 will probably win this one as they are easier to make games for as well than the difficult PS3. And sure PS2 was the best system easily of last generation and won the console war, that means squat. Ask Nintendo which annhilated Atari and in the following generation still narrowly defeated Sega (how Sony narrowly defeated Microsoft). Nintendo dropped to a sizeable second the following generation to Sony and a distant third with Gamecube.

And I'm not saying PS3 will be Gaemcube but if I had to predict, my bet is expect an N64 drop in sales and 3rd parties respectively. The wild card is the Wii, but personally I don't care who wins because I think the Wii looks the most fun and promising, even if comes in third again.

Don't fear the Wiiper!

The biggest problem with PS3 is Sony's change in business strategy. PS1 and 2 both came out a year before their competitors during that year they built a large libary of games (with big time exclusives like MK3, Doom, GTA, etc...). PS2 wasn't built on the potential under the hood, but the games that were released and could still be played, also by the time their competitors released their systems they could drop the price to make it even more attractive. None of this it true for the PS3.
