Microsoft rep: HD-DVD possibly next Beta-Max

I'm getting the snip :oldrazz:

You get nothing, you lost the rights to your child to both me and BatMatt.

If anyone can name a single new format sony have EVER managed to launch and turn into a success I'll give them my first child.

Every new format they've introduced has failed. They're in a bad way financially already. Blu-ray is gonna tank, end of story

CD, DVD, 3 1/2 floppy, Video8, UMD, and MiniDisk were not total and complete failures. The only format that Sony release that was a failure was the betamax. CD and DVD are still extremely successful. 3 1/2 floppy became pretty much the standard of floppy disks. Video8 was very successful in the camcorder market. MiniDisk was extremely successful in the Japanese market. UMD is being used for video games for the Playstation Portable and I'm willing to bet that it will be used for the Playstation Portable 2 and it will probally be used by other future handhelds once they stop using cartridges.

You lose your first born child, now it's up to me and BatMatt to decide on custody.

Sony actually took part in inventing CD and DVD. Which are much more important than what you mentioned. Also, the MiniDisk is not a flop, it was a major success in Japan. I win, you lose. I deserve full custody.

Japan doesn't count, they are one of the most rascist nations on the planet. They only buy because it has sony on the label and sony is a japanese company. This is why the xbox had such a hardtime over there

Yes, Japan does count. People will not simply buy because it has Sony's name on it. If that were the case betamax would have been a success there. Also, HD-DVD is primarily developed by a Japanese company (Toshiba), and is getting ass-raped by blu-ray there. And the Xbox has a hard time there because the vast majority of its games are not appealing to the Japanese market.

You want to talk about a racist nation. Go to China or France. The Chinese hate the Japanese people and the French are more wary of Muslims than we are.

Shut up and hand us over your first born now :cmad:

Yes IBM invented the floppy disk but of course the 3.5" was the one to become dominant and video8 was rather popular as a camcorder format. Of course CDs and DVDs are much bigger deals

Hence why I deserve custody rights on Wednesday through Sunday plus all holidays. You just get Monday and Tuesday.

Seems to me that Blu-ray is pulling ahead of HD-DVD as on IGN there are a ****load of announcements regarding Blu-ray releases, and none about HD-DVD releases.

Blu-Ray won't last if they keep up not letting porn be made.

Early technology appeals to the hardcore base, it's not like DVD was considered awesome by the average consumer until it it mass market in a cheaper way. And it's not liek Blu Ray and HD-DVD aren't following a similar pricing trend to the curve DVD was on years before.

So saying that HD discs aren't going to take off because they're too expensive for the average consumer NOW like isn't taking the near term future into consideration.

The thing is that DVDs were a huge leap from the VHS. Bonus material, language options, and chapter selections were pretty new. The differences between HD DVD and BluRay are BARELY visible at this point.

HD DVD sports many nice new features not available on DVD such as:
- Menu access without leaving the movie
- HDi, In-Home Experience, and U-Control for PiP Video Comentary and enhanced interaction
- Chapter Bookmarking
- Chapter "sharing" with friends across the net (upcoming this summer)
- Visual timeline shown when FF, RW, or pausing movie to show where in the movie you are

etc. etc.

Seriously, the HD video and audio for HD DVD is completely awesome. But I'm honestly more stoked about the OTHER extra features that HD DVD can give you that SD DVD cannot. It's really a shame it's not talked about as much as teh aud/vid aspect of the format.

As someone who has always loved the audio commentary found on most DVDs, getting VIDEO commentary is even more exciting! Watch how they made a particular scene, view storyboards, etc etc all without leaving the movie!

And it goes even further! Imagine the screen being like in a football game. Y'know how they will circle different players, and draw arrows, and such overtop the picture as they talk about the game? Well HDi for HD DVD makes this possible in your movies, too.

The best example I've seen so far is on my copy of "Harry Potter 4". The two guys who play the Weasley twins "host" the video commentary, and all the while joke about how their characters are the most important ones in the film. The screen actually has a visual countdown from 10 to 1 to countdown to where the two actors first show up in the movie. And later on, they even circle themselves in another scene in order to point themselves out. Sure it may sound a bit annoying, but it really does a lot to show the potential this format has.

Btw, Blu-ray is incapable of doing the same ;)

But seriously, the differences from DVD to HD DVD are every bit as drastic as from VHS to DVD. Most people just aren't aware of it yet, because they haven't had the opportunity to really explore the new format. Remember...the majority of people originally thought VHS was "just as good" as DVD, too.

It's stupid to start developing an HD-DVD or blu-ray collection. What if one of the formats lose :o

I'm going to buy The Prestige on Blu-Ray, the cinematography is fantastic so I believe that it warrants my first purchase on the format.

I have confidence in my choice. Not to mention that even if Blu-ray wins, it's not like my HD DVD collection will suddenly stop working.

And if everyone had that attitude, no competing technology would ever gain dominance and win.

I realize the risk I'm taking, but like I said, I feel confident enough in my decision that HD DVD will not be going away for a long while, that I can fully support it.

you can probably start buyin HD-DVD porn soon

haha. I already did. I'm not venturing into that area until a few more titles come out.

I'm gonna have to go with HD DVD. Universal recently announced that they are going to make 100 HD DVDs that are exclusive to the HD DVD format, and 90% of those will be backward compatible with standard DVD players. So even if someone doesn't have a HD DVD player, they have nothing to lose by buying HD DVDs. Also, HD DVD players are less than half the price of Blu-Ray players right now and the discs themselves are cheaper as well.

Oh snap. Microsoft suits totally burned Sony with that comment. Ha. 360 is better anyways.
