Miracle: Homeless Man Goes From Rags to Riches in One Day

Well, when you don't have any money for drugs, it's kind of tough to get them. Now is when the real struggle will begin when he has money again for drugs.

Ever heard of pan handling? A guy can make enough to score some rock in a day.

Yeah, I don't get the feeling that being homeless was the cause for his sobriety. Drugs are what usually KEEP people homeless.

He's been sober for 2 years and once your life has gotten to that point, where you're living on the streets and you've lost everything, just being sober isn't going to magically get you your life back. He didn't even have any form of identification at this point, you need that, and a social security number, to get a job, not to mention a bank account, clean clothing, usually some form of transportation, etc. Unless someone takes you in, it's pretty hard to get back on your feet.

So...

I'm gonna be "that guy", since no one else seems to be. Not because I neccessarily skew this way, just for the sake of discussion, because I feel like it's getting pretty one-sided (as maybe it should).

I think this is a great story. But does anyone else think this is all just a tad ridiculous?

The guy has a great voice. He does. He's shades of Rick Dees and whatnot. But he's not so good that half the major networks should be falling all over him to get him to actually work for them, or that he should get hundreds of job offers. I've listened to his voice quite a bit. It's good. It's not so good that it outshines every other radio/TV voice I've heard in the last however long.

He was homeless, now he's going to be relatively wealthy. Cool. I believe in redemption...but I also don't think redemption equals having things handed to you because you were on YouTube, or a radio show as a guest. I listen to Dave and Jimmy and their Morning Zoo here in Columbus every morning, and I get what they were doing, and what they were trying to do. I just kind of feel like it's gotten a bit much. And his real redemption is still to come, obviously. I keep seeing people say how nice a guy he is...how wonderful he is...well, maybe. But he's already not told people the full story of his past, though he's not committed the worst crimes in the world. Everyone does deserve a second chance, though. Just because he says he's clean certainly doesn't mean he is. It's kind of ironic...the drugs and alchohol are probably a huge reason he HAS that great voice.

Nothing like bringing someone else down to bring yourself up, huh?

How ignorant can you be? Did you even bother reading the ****ing story or are you just here to be "that guy"? He went to broadcasting school, it's not because of drugs.

He was pretty good on Jimmy Fallon last night. A couple more weeks and he will settle into his new job and be pretty much forgotten by the national media.

But he's already not told people the full story of his past, though he's not committed the worst crimes in the world.

Is he somehow obligated to do so?

I'm not saying he's some kind of hero (he abandoned his wife and kids after all), but I'm not pissed off that he's getting the oppurtunities he's getting, either.

I'm gonna take what an above poster said and spin it a bit to put it in a positive light. There is some irony in that drugs and and other types of abuse to your throat can change the sound of your voice and may have given him that extra bit of flare in his voice that the media seems to like so much. I know he went to broadcasting school which taught him how to speak properly, but there is only so much you can do to help someone develope a specific sound of voice in the end your vocal cords do the rest. Its like how smoking can cause someones voice to get rougher. Him putting his vocal cords through hell could have given him that special sound everyone likes. Don't misunderstand me, I am happy for him. I think his past is his past, and no one has a right to it. I just find it facinating how fate or coincidence have led him to this specific moment of happiness in his life. Above all though, I am glad the man got to see his mother again. She is in her 90s so they both are very lucky to have gotten to meet again given that she may not have much life left in her.

Why can't you just believe that it's his natural voice?

He has a naturally deep voice. It has nothing to do with drugs.

I'm not saying he doesn't, lol. I'm saying that after years of smoking weed or tobacco it does affect your vocal cords. I smoke tobacco I know. I just find it facinating that rather than his vocal cords being ruined after his hard lifestyle they basically saved him in his time of need.

Sigh...

I could have sworn I made my position clear.

I am ignorant in the sense that I am a Bass/Baritone/Baritone. I sing, and I act. I know a lot about voices, and how to create voices, and alter them. I have friends and coworkers who have been in radio. As such, I'm not completely ignorant...I know enough about about how one's voice is affected.

No, drugs and alchohol alone will not produce that voice.

That it will is a bit of an old wive's tale.

I made a statement that was meant to be a bit of a joke and clearly didn't come across that way.

My apologies. Next time I will put a winking smiley, or a joke tab or something.

I understand what you mean and I feel the same way for the most part.
